This was a last minute booking--about a month before the cruise. The fare dropped to $699 (this is not a type) for a balcony cabin! For a 16-day cruise and Panama Canal on our bucket list, we just couldn't pass this cruise up. This was also our 11th cruise in 3 years--and 3rd on NCL--so we knew what to expect.

The Joy is a mega-ship with 3800 passengers. We only felt crowded and waited for elevators after the Muster, Leaving the Joy Theater at night or when returning from a shore excursion.

Pros:

Cabin Review

Balcony Stateroom

GREAT! Well-designed space with lots of storage in the cabin and bathroom. Don't miss the drawers under the sofa. The closet is a little small, and we hate the fixed hangers, but everything else is well-designed and comfortable for a 16-day cruise.

This was a "sail away" cabin, so it was assigned to us. It was quiet in the rear of the ship--not too far from the aft elevators...convenient to the dining rooms and midship venues But a long walk to the front elevators to the Observation Lounge, Garden Cafe and Joy Theater. The extra walking helped keep our weight down--and for $699 for a 16-day cruise, we just accepted this one small inconvenience.

Port Reviews

Puerto Quetzal (Antigua)

We took the bus to Antigua and then did the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour. The city is small, so you can walk it or choose to get on the small van. The ride to Antigua is 1.5 - 2 hours, so you see a lot of the Guatamalan countryside including volcanoes and farms/crops for exportation. Antigua was built in the 1500s, and the architecture and city are fascinating. Well worth the time to get there.

Acapulco

We got off the ship and walked to the Market place. We felt safe, because a local " chamber of commerce-guide" walked with us and gave us information. He exchanged our dollars for pesos for purchases in the local stores and he escorted us back to the street leading back to the ship. We gave him a tip for his service.

Mazatlan

This was our 4th time in Mazatlan, so we skipped the planned excursion. We took a taxi to the Golden Zone, shopped (many many jewelry stores) and ate at Lucky B's. Good guacamole and tacos. Don't miss the Mango Margarita!

Puerto Vallarta

Our 4th trip to PV in the last two years....we always take a taxi to the Malecon (a boardwalk along the beach) with lots of shops and sidewalk cafes. We order $1 Margaritas--which are not bad, Mexican beer and guacamole. It's always a delightful day.

Cabo San Lucas

After you get off the ship, local guides with small boats offer any type of water excursion you want--at the fraction of the price of a ship shore excursion. We always go on a small glass-bottom boat to see the arch, rock formations and seals. Since we've done it so many times, we usually just say no to the local guides, but they are persistent. So we went again this time for $10 pp. Keep saying "no" and the price drops. They will drop you off at a beach resort and pick you up later. After the 30-45 minute tour, we walk along the marina and visit one of the many restaurants where breakfast is served until 11 am or you can get Margaritas and Cerveza. Just like in all the ports, local vendors can be annoying--just say "no gracias" and they will leave you alone. Remember, they are just trying to make a living, so be courteous and kind.
