This was our first cruise on HAL. We typically cruise on Norwegian or Royal Caribbean but got an outstanding deal on this cruise so we decided to give HAL a try. I would say that overall we really enjoyed the cruise and felt that it was a very good experience for the price. There were some things that I felt exceeded expectations and a few that feel a bit short of our desires. We knew going in that HAL tends to cater to an older audience so we expected the feel to be a bit reserved. My wife and I are certainly not party animals. On the positive side we generally liked the music aboard. It was nice to actually know the songs (mainly classic rock and country) but they could have been a bit more beach party especially at the sail away party and by the pool deck. The main stage shows were okay but certainly less than we had experienced on other lines. The first dance show was great and the illusionist was good but the comedian wasn't good at all and the second dance show was sort of boring. We really did enjoy the music walk. The BB King band was great. They played some great R and B with some blues and rock thrown in. The Lincoln Center stage classical concerts were very good as well. The Billboard piano bar was ok. As for the food we thought that overall the food was very good. We booked any time dining in the main dining room. The food quality was good but not awesome and we found that there was always a long line to get into the main dining room and once in we experienced a long delay in getting our order taken and between courses. So on the third day we switched to eating our meals on the Ledo deck. We were very happy with this choice. They offered a wide selection on the buffet, the food was fresh and the service was actually very pleasant. We were in cabin 1027 which is a catigory F ocean view room. The cabin was fine. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was nice. Lots of storage. Nice window with an unobstructed view. We heard only a little bit of noise from the music venue above us but it wasn't bad at all. Our cabin steward was good.

A good first cruise on HAL

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)
We walked to the main taxi stand at the entrance to the port facility and negotiated with a taxi driver to give us an all day tour of the city of Porto Plata including going to the top of the mountain to the botanical gardens. We paid $80 for four people for what ended up being a five hour tour.

The botanical gardens are amazing. Our taxi driver walked us around the garden and showed us the sites. I would strongly suggest that the gardens are well worth the time.

In town our driver took us to several tourist shops that I'm sure he got a kick back from. Most of these were ok, but we don't really enjoy shopping so after about four stops I informed him that we didn't want any more shops. He said ok and for the rest of the day we were shopping free.

We stopped by the Spanish fort for a short visit.

On to the beach for an hour on the beach and some beers.

We asked him to take us through the residential part of town he was happy to show us his neighborhood.

He stopped by several other photo opportunities that he thought we would enjoy.

He spent time talking with us and explaining the things we were seeing.

He took us to a grocery store and a stop by the local farmers market where we purchased some awesome fresh fruit.

We had a wonderful time, we didn't feel rushed at all and got to choose what we wanted to see.

We were with him for 5 hours and he would have been fine with us going longer. He didn't expect payment till the end of the day. We gave him the agreed upon $80 plus a $20 tip because he had been so nice and had made our day special. In the end that comes out to be $25 per person for the day which was way less than a packaged excursion and we had total control of the day.

We walked off the ship and contracted with a taxi driver to take us on a tour of the island and allow us to stop and snorkel for two hours. We paid $18 for about 4 hours for four of us. It was ok but honestly there really isn't much to see on the island and the snorkeling wasn't any better than what was at the cruise port

We walked as far to the left off the ship and went as you can go to the point of the island.

When we got there we had the beach to ourselves. There was no one for at least 200 yards. More people came later but still was very uncrowded.

At the point of the island the snorkeling is very good. There is a small reef about 50 feet off shore that is ok but not great.

There is a second reef about 200 yards off shore that was awesome. The far side of this reef drops off to a deep depth and the life along this wall drop is amazing. I crossed the reef several times and swam along the wall drop several times as well. I saw several types of reef fish ranging from the tiny 1 to 2 inch variety up to several breeds about 2 feet in length. I also saw an octopus and several snails. I also saw two barricuda and a sea turtle. There were also a good variety of coral alone this further reef.

It's a long walk from the dock to the end of the island (at least a mile) but it is well worth it. The beach is beautiful and uncrowded and if you are a moderate swimmer and can swim 200 yards out the snorkeling is wonderful. And if you own your own snorkel gear it's all free.

We chose to take the FREE shuttle bus that runs a loop around Key West. The bus is operated by the city of Key West. It's totally free and stops at or near all of the main tourist sites on the island. The bus comes about every 15 minutes. I had downloaded some walking tour information ahead of time and with that and the shuttle we had a great time and spent very little money.
