This was an RCI package cruise and the worst way to ever travel (bye bye RCI) because it was either a balcony on Costa/MSC or an interior room on the bigger names, like Royal. We decided to try Costa and it will be the last time. First, Costa likes to play the "we're separate entities" game when dealing between the host desk and tours. No one is responsible to the passenger but the department that doesn't belong to Costa, and they all belong to Costa! The food is horrible and what other reviewers say about closing down the buffet early is correct. I lost weight on this cruise..and while that is a surprise, it's only because the food was mostly disgusting. Do not order the daily fruit option -- first the produce grade is "C", which means it's barely good enough to sell at a discount but ready to ferment if you don't consume it right away. I have pictures of rotting fruit on day one and they REFUSED to cancel it. Every day we received rotting or near uber ripe fruit and seeded grapes. Even the plums, apples and kiwi were bruises and browning on the inside. Tours -- do not book ahead. They never sell out but if you have a medical emergency, they'll not release your spouse to help you seek medical attention and you'll lose money. I actually had a tour desk person laugh that we booked a tour on disembarkation day. Not only did his manager apologize but he was forced to go on our tour with us. Be that as it may, I just wanted to cancel it because they really are quite unprofessional and the costs far exceed the value. You're better off getting the shuttle to the city (or train to Rome) and doing it on your own. Balcony -- avoid deck 5 -- you're right over the life boats and there are bright lights shining all night long that will impede your ocean view. Our particular cabin had a slow drain in the shower and when they finally plunged it, enough hair to cover a hairpiece was recovered. Later I saw a man waiting in the forever-host-desk line yelling "when will they clear the sewage backing up into our room?!!" Clearly Costa doesn't maintain their rooms. We had a medical need onboard and the medical staff are phenomenal. If there could be activities and tours with the medical staff then this cruise would have been much more tolerable. Crazy, eh?

Medical the best, avoid tours group and hope you don't need the host desk

Tour operator blamed traffic for us not being able to do all the events planned (like going into most of the historical sites). Instead we got to visit the outside of most of the sites.
