This was out 9th cruise with NCL (40th overall). Other reviews for this cruise were bad and deservedly so. There are some areas where I disagree and I will state them here.
DINING: This was a bit hit and miss. We thought the paid specialty restaurants were excellent with great food and service (we generally ate around 5-5:30). We went to Cagneys (3), Teppanyaki (3), La Cucina (2) and Moderno (1). The Taste and Savor dining rooms were OK with rather strange menus. Due to that and the lines (despite reservations) we actually used the Buffett more than the dining rooms. O'Sheehans was OK, nothing special. The service in the dining rooms was slow!!! The breakfast buffet was very good with the afternoon/dinner being more typical buffet food.
Entertainment: We thought the production show (Burn the Floor) and Million Dollar Quartet were excellent. The headliner (singer and violinist) were also excellent. Ship entertainers were very good! Despite having reservations there were long lines for the shows (early). If you didn't get there at least a half hour before showtime, you may not sit together. We did not attend the paid shows.
Shore Excursions: We used NCL in Southampton, Portland and Le Havre. We enjoyed the excursions despite long rides to Bath and Stonehenge. Rouen France was a much shorter ride. Not much NCL can do about getting the ship closer! We knew how long the rides were when we booked the tours. Missed the Azores but there's nothing much one can do.
Embarkation/Debarkation: Getting on was easy and quick. Getting off was a mini disaster. Long waits and lines through the ship. Once in the baggage area it was a typical mess and more lines to get out of the building. Long taxi line!
Tendering at GSC: Disaster, disaster, disaster!! After 2 hours and still sitting in the Theater, we just gave up and went to the buffet for lunch. People coming back said they were out of food onshore. Very crowded with the NCL Sun in port also.
Crew/Service: I found them to be helpful and very pleasant. Our cabin attendant Michael was excellent! Wait staff in speciality restaurants were outstanding! Also enjoyed the Cruise Director's staff. Not sure what they pay Junior but he deserves a raise!!
Public spaces: Too many big events in the Atrium! There were 4,000 people on this ship and everyone wants to congregate in the Atrium. There is simply not enough seating! During shows the passengers took chairs from the computer area and Starbucks so that those areas were unusable unless you wanted to stand. The other problem with the Atrium is that it is also the site of the busiest bar on the ship and the location for Guest Services, Shore Excursions and Cruise Next. Alot of noise and crowds. The ship also has alot of small bars that are no good for anything other than drinking and it was hard to hear the entertainers. One other issue is that NCL let card players take over the Starbucks seating area during the day! The overall crowding problem was particularly bad until the ship hit warmer waters. After that, passengers were able to get outside and use the pool deck during the day. Crowding returned in the evening.
Overall Cruise: We still had a good time despite the crowds, many lines and missed ports. I seriously doubt that I would sail on the Getaway again and would be hesitant to sail on anything larger than the Jewel Class ships on NCL
Nice stateroom close to the busy Decks 6, 7 and 8
