To start off with I want to clarify the rating of 2. It is not a reflection on the staff (except maybe the Captain), the food or the general boat, though there are some small gripes about that.
We, and a lot of the guests, booked this cruise because they wanted to go to Kotor and Santorini. There was an unexplained problem with the boat and so they cancelled Santorini and Kotor. This meant we stayed further north and hit bad weather meaning one of the replacement ports of call could not be made. So instead of no sea days we ended up with 3. It was never explained why we could not get as far as Santorini and they seemed to want to ignore the fact that things had been changed. They gave some compensation but really not enough for the large itinerary change. So very disgruntled because of all that, hence the 2.
The rumours on the Norwegian Star were that it had experienced problems with one of its azipods and that there had even been a fire of some type. NCL never said what had happened or whether the ship had been inspected by appropriate authorities.
So very annoying , made worse by very poor communication and the Captain hiding away
Now moving onto other things , the ship, the food and the crew.
Communication was generally not that great, small things like the daily sheets not saying if we would be walking or tendering off the boat and if there would be a shuttle to the nearest place. Also no local maps or particular information about the ports of call.
The ship is all very neat and tidy and clean but there are no comfortable areas to sit inside that have views. So if the weather is bad you cannot sit and read and still see out. In fact the comfy seating is quite limited. Fine, maybe, in warm places but if the weather is cooler not so good.
There is piped music playing everywhere, not sure why, and some of the live music in the Atrium was far too loud if you wanted to have a sit and a chat.
The food is very good, be it in the open dining, buffet or specialist dining rooms. It is a bit annoying that even with the Ultimate drinks juice and coffee package you cannot have fresh orange at breakfast or hot drinks in the Atrium, if you want a can of drink you will also have to pay, so not quite so Ultimate.
The onboard entertainment, with professional entertainers, was very good.
The crew are all very friendly and helpful and the movement of people on and off the boat some of the best we have had. Never any really long queues and bag pickup very well organised.
Because of the lack of an observation deck we would avoid this ship, and I know thats a personal thing as is music being too loud, maybe we are just getting old!
So all in all we do like NCL, but would avoid this design of ship and are wary of how they address problems.
The cabin is well fitted out with good decor, a coffee machine and small fridge.
The hairdryer is powerful, so my wife tells me, and the bed comfortable.
We love Venice, our third visit
