We just returned from the October 8 trip on the Meraviglia to Canada from New York. We were in the Yacht Club so I am comparing this to other luxury cruises I have been on such as Silversea or Crystal.
As has been said the embarkation process was very poor. There was no YC luggage drop off nor did anybody know there was a YC area however there was and we found it by pure chance. We checked in, were told our card key was in the room and headed to the gangway where MSC security refused us entry because we didn’t have a card key. After many phone calls we were let onboard and left to our own to find our room.
Our room, and the ship in general were very nice, well laid out and very clean. Our room stewardess and butler were very nice and did whatever we asked as was the YC desk on deck 16. We found the majority of ship personal to be helpful and eager to please however many struggled with English. The ship is very large so many of the personal really had no idea about other areas of the ship besides where they worked.
The ship is very large and very crowded. There is no quiet place, no place without lines, no place to sit down except if you are very early or very lucky. Getting off was easy as the butler would take us past the very long lines however getting back on was a nightmare. In Quebec they had one gangway for passengers and crew, 7000+ people. It took us over a hour to get back on.
Unlike most luxury lines the YC is not all inclusive. We were charged a service charge of 12.50$ pp per day. The speciality restaurants were extra charge. We got some free internet, 3000mb per person. All drinks throughout the ship were included, this worked well as we never were turned down or had a problem. I had to pay for a gelato, however it was the best I ever had, along with the JPM Chocolate,
We took two ship tours that I booked on line before the trip at a nice discount. We meet in the YC lounge and the butler took us to the bus, no lines or hassle. Tours were very nice and did as advertised. That said it was a hassle to get back on the ship.
We ate the majority of our meals in the YC restaurant, which gets rather boring. I was shocked at how limited the menu is although it does change daily. One third into the trip we found out there are some always available basic dishes that they forgot to print on the new American menu. The service and presentation were great but the food was not. I felt the quality, prep and taste of most dishes was off. I spoke to the YC chef and suggested he taste the food before serving it to no anvil. The YC grill on deck 19 was only open one day due to the weather however it was wonderful. Here is a hint, don’t waste your money taking a cold weather trip on this ship. We ate in the sushi restaurant one night. We got a comp dinner because of our black card status. Food and service was great and very easy to make reservation. We used room service a few times, worked well. You can not order from the restaurant menu, only the limited room service menu. We went to the main buffet once, place was a zoo, very basic and bland food. Pizza fresh and good but pizza man a grouch. Asked about special orders in YC restaurant and politely told no way.
YC lounge was very nice with some music at times, tea service in the afternoon and some basic snacks changing during the day. Service here was great along with the drinks.
All in all the YC on MSC is not equivalent to a luxury cruise. Once you leave the YC area you are on a very crowded budget cruise. In the YC area the staff is great however the fine points are missing and the food is a disaster. Its hard to never say never however I think this was my first and last MSC trip. There value for the money in the YC is very poor
Cabin was large, well laid out with good storage. Very quite. Cabin along with whole YC is high, deck 15,16,18,19 and very forward so lots of motion. If you get sea sick stay away.
