As everyone else here, I too read all the reviews prior to going on this cruise. I had booked the trip last February and thought about canceling but decided to take a chance knowing that service would be a problem. In all honesty, if I had not read the comments here, I wouldn't have found many problems with the trip at all. This is my 13th cruise and the first with NCL (other cruises were with Carnival and Royal Caribbean). While I did enjoy other cruises a bit more, I thought NCL is trying hard to improve the cruise.

I, like most others, found the food to be average but never found it to be terrible. We had room service, ate on the buffet and ate at one specialty restaurant, Kahili, which was excellent. We never ventured to the dining room where several people have had problems in the past. We did see people waiting to be seated in the dining rooms on 2 occasions - once with a fairly large crowd outside the main doors. There was only one large lone at the buffets and that was for the Seafood Buffet on the second night. I certainly didn't think the buffet food was any worse than Carnival or Royal Caribbean but not a great deal better. I never heard any complaints about passenger dining experiences but it is true that drink choices were slim (no lemonade available) and no frozen yogurt as we've come to expect on most ships.

We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village the night before the cruise (awesome) and walked through Waikiki ourselves. We went to the NCL Service Center in the Marriott to pre-check in but their computers had been down all week so we didn't get the chance. We took numerous tours and, yes, they are pricey but for the most part they were worth it. We kayaked down a river near the ship in Kauai followed by some hiking. the guide was excellent and the pace laid-back. We also did the helicopter tour in Kauai which I highly recommend - it was the highlight of the trip. Otherwise we went to a few shops and ate dinner off the ship (the buffets do get old after awhile).
