After reading some of the negative reviews about this ship we had our concerns prior to the cruise. We like to think our standards are extremely high and we expect a good service. This cruise ship and all the staff on board totally surpassed our expectations. We chose this cruise for the wildlife and the experience of going to an area that is inaccessible any other way. Yes, the Grand is an old lady now but there were really hardly any concerns or negative comments we could say about the ship itself. We booked the Owners suite on the back of the ship and the perks of being in a full suite were fantastic. From being personally escorted to our state room on the first morning in San Francisco, minibar set up, welcome bottle of champagne, refreshed water and ice every day, extensive fruit bowl, fresh orchid delivered to our room, speciality suite breakfast in the Crown restaurant every morning, free laundry ..... the list goes on and on. We also had a designated concierge contact Lucy, who called numerous times, just to check all was to our liking. On the first night we had a free speciality dinner in the Crown Grill which was fantastic and every other night we ate in Da Vinci club class restaurant. The staff were so attentive in every restaurant we went into, we never came across anybody who was anything less than professional and friendly. Giovanni and his team always went over and above what was necessary to give us a great experience every evening, even remembering our preferences after the first night. We cannot really comment on the evening activities as we tended to enjoy a pre-dinner drink at the Explorers bar (fantastic frozen Margaritas) then go for dinner and then we would go back to our room and enjoy the facilities in our suite and balcony. This was the same for during the day as well, we wanted to see the wildlife rather than sit indoors, so again we spent most of our days at sea on our balcony. We were extremely lucky with the weather and had glorious sunshine most days.

Fantastic cruise with superb service

Cabin Review

Cabin B 751
As mentioned in the main review the suite had so many perks which made our experience so much nicer.
Huge thank you to Sandrie who went out of his way to ensure we had everything we wanted every day. The moment we stepped out of our state room he was in there straightaway making sure it was in pristine condition, always with a ready smile on his face. We cannot praise him enough for looking after us the way he has done.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Whale Watching
We took the Discover Alaska Whales tour. This was a small group tour of only nine people plus Mindy, our fantastic guide, and Captain James. The boat was a scientific research vessel, so not only just a whale watching trip, it also taught us a lot about the other water life in the area .
This is a guaranteed money back tour if no Whales are spotted. However we spotted Whales very quickly and Captain James took us to an area where we were lucky enough to see five Wales which included two babies and they came so close to the boat. We took some fantastic video footage and photographs of these amazing creatures.
Amazingly we also saw some orca killer whales very close to the boat.
This excursion was the highlight of our holiday and we will never see Whales so close again in our entire lives.
On our way we did stop to look at a crab pot they had put in the water to scientifically investigate if a particular crab was in the area. This proved to be an interesting and very brief part of the tour.
We would highly recommend this tour as a small intimate and Informative excursion.
Thanks to Mindy and Captain James for making this a once in a lifetime experience.

This was a great fun excursion to do.
We took a small boat to an uninhabited island where we got to drive these small ATV’s over rough terrain around this island.
Our guide Joe was really informative about the area and we learnt a lot. We did not get to see any bears but we did see bear tracks.
    Would highly recommend this excursion
