We have previously cruised before but wanted to try something a little more upmarket. We were very impressed by the standards of this cruise we cannot wait to go back. Everything was just right. We got on at Southampton having staying at the Chilworth Manor hotel on their park and cruise package (included is bed and breakfast, over night stay, 3 course meal in their restaurant, parking and taxis to/from the terminal). All was very efficient. When the taxi arrived at the terminal our bags were taken from us for safe passage onto the train. Getting onto the ship was no hassle. We got on around midday. Our rooms were not ready until around 1pm but they had the oceans café open for lunch. It was busy but the food was delightful. Getting to our cabin we were happy with our home for the week. A comfortable reasonable sized bed. Good quality toiletries. Great shower with closable door (I hate shower curtains so was pleased to see there was not one!). Towels could have been a bit bigger but did their job! We asked the cabin steward for larger robes as well which were delivered to us. Tea and coffee making facilities. Safe. Hairdryer (not the greatest). TV with various channels on including the traditional cruise channels like view from the bridge and the directors channel. We had a little seating area with a sofa and table and also a mirror with another chair. We were on deck 6 in room 6187 - this is the first level with the balcony rooms and where the life boats are. We did not have an obstructed view of the horizon - it meant that we could not look down to the sea due to the life boat being there. It wasn't really an issues at all although I did think it was going to be before we got on the ship. There is plenty storage - the cupboards above the bed are almost hidden and I wouldn't have known about them if someone had not said! This gives plenty of room and your suitcase should be able to fit under the bed out of sight and mind. Our cabin steward was great - the room was always spotless. Turn down every night and towels replaced in the morning and/or evening. Loved getting the cruise news letter in the evening for the next days activities. The food was amazing. We had evening meals in the Grand Cuvee every day, waiter served lunch when it was available and breakfast here every morning too. The menus were superb. We did not have a bad meal and I ate absolutely everything on my plate. We had select dining and we would usually be given a beeper around 8pm and sat 15-20mintes after and just got a drink in the mean time. The waiter staff were excellent. Alternatively the oceans café was open throughout the day. We went there for lunch and afternoon tea and a midnight snack on some of the days! It can be busy. The food is of a very good quality. There is also the master grill outside to get burgers/hotdogs/ice cream throughout the day. The food in all was an absolute highlight of the cruise. There were speciality restaurants but as we had to pay extra we did not think it was worth it given the high standard of the main restaurant. The drinks were very reasonable and the waiters were very generous. On the classic drinks package you could have most things but I guess it is your personal tastes that would dictate this. On the classic package we did have to pay more at the martini bar and for some cocktails but it was only the difference so it was not a lot. The wines for meals were great. There are various bars available. The passport bar in the grand foyer on level 3 had a lot of seats to lounge on and also served coffee. The grand foyer is where some events took place so this was a nice place to sit. The sky lounge on deck 14 was mainly where we went in the evening for live music but they also had quizzes on during the day. They served some nice cocktails. Martini bar had an actually iced bar which was fun. The cellar masters does good wines and also sherry and port which we couldn't get else where on the ship. They had various bars around the ship including in the casino, quaser and by the pool. We enjoyed the selection of drinks and the availability of the bars. The pools on deck 12 were great. They were heated so just about bearable to get in when we were in Norway! The jacazzis are amazing - our best experience with these was going in at 10pm at night! Exhilarating! Loads of towels and blankets available. They also have swimming pool and jacuzzi inside if sitting out in the cold isn't for you! The entertainment was to a very high standard. The shows in the evening with the performers were excellent. The acrobats were incredible. We did not really enjoy the comedian but this is personal taste. They had live bands and a great female singer too. The shows were at 7 and 9pm giving opportunity for dinner. We really enjoyed the silent discos. The late night quiz games were also hilarious. The cruise director was very entertaining. The casino was large. We do not usually frequent casinos but we won a free $20 bet on the slot machines and spent a rather amusing few hours spending our bet! There were talks during the day about the ports of call, the gulf stream and even the captain did one about navigation. 'Evening chic' is their formal night - we had two. It was nice to see most people making an effort. The ports were all very good. I liked that actually there was not too much to do at each port so that one could get off, go explore and get back on board feeling like you had seen enough of the city. We did not do any of the ships shore excursions as it was so much cheaper to do it ourselves. We really enjoyed getting back on the ship to nice hot chocolate! Overall this was the best cruise we have been on (so far). Everything seemed catered for. We enjoyed speaking to fellow cruisers and how diverse the passengers and staff were. We felt very well fed and watered and above all very relaxed thankful that we were able to go on such an immense cruise.
