Viking Sea Cruise Review by Astute Traveler 33040

Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Jun 2019
  • Destination: the Baltic Sea

We selected this cruise based on the recommendation of friends who had taken it and loved it. We were very happy with our choice. We always wanted to visit the Baltic countries and found the Viking Homelands itinerary to be the best by far in the small luxury cruise category. This was especially true for the ports of call in Denmark and Norway. The optional shore excursion choices in all ports of call were extensive with lots of variety and the ability to get out of cities and into the countryside. While some of the optional excursions were a bit costly, all but one that we selected was worth the cost. This was particularly true of the two day optional tour in St. Petersburg which was fantastic !! Onboard service was outstanding. Our room steward never missed getting our cabin cleaned while we were at breakfast. Room service was always delivered exactly at the time requested. We loved this very busy trip and needed a vacation from our vacation upon arriving home :-)

Cabin Review

Cabin PV 5087

The cabin was a wonderful layout, very roomy and comfortable. The storage space was more than adequate and the bed very comfortable. We were extremely pleased.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

Old Town Porvoo

Beautiful ride to a lovely old port trading town outside of Helsinki. Also toured part of the City Prior returning to the ship.

City Tour

This two day excursion included Catherine's and Peterhof Palaces, The Hermitage, key sites in the City including the Church of The Spilled Blood and St Basil Cathedral as well as a performance of the St. Petersburg Ballet. A fabulous two days with an outstanding guide. Worth every dollar spent on it.

Old Town of Tallinn

Walking tour included with the cruise. We had a wonderful guide but this could be crowded if there are several cruise ships in town all touring Old Town. We were the only ship in Port which made it really nice.

Nice, not spectacular. Does get you into the countryside.

Berlin

This is a very long tour probably worth doing if you have never been to Berlin. The tour by train, coach and canal cruise allowed us to see all the Berlin highlights with ample opportunities for pictures and included lunch on the canal.

Aalborg

The trip was Aalborg out to the Rugjerg Knute disappearing lighthouse was one of the best excursions we took. Just fantastic !!

Pulpit Rock

Beautiful boat ride up the fjord. Veins from the bow are fantastic !!

Eidfjord

The scenic Flan Railroad excursion is indeed scenic but was very crowded with too many coaches hitting the same sites at the same time which detracted from the experience on this excursion.

Great walking tour of Bergen and the fish market on your way the the boat for the fjord cruise where you are served a delicious feast of King Crab.
