  3. Island Princess
Embarkation and disembarkation went nicely, but it should since that's their business. The cabin was comfortable and we enjoyed having a starboard side balcony. The sheets and mattress were very comfortable. The ship was nice as were most employees, some entertain was stellar but some was mediocre, most food was good but not stellar (the main dining room and buffet on lido deck were pretty good most of the time, the burgers at the burger place were downright awful (McDonalds makes a better burger), the ice cream place had only soft serve vanilla, chocolate and swirl to choose from and were often out of cones. The excursions booked through Princess were our biggest disappointment. Many were not as described in that they were either half (or less) of the advertised length or the wildlife sightings in each area were wildly inflated. We asked each guide what wildlife were were likely to see on their excursion and often learned there was the likelihood of only seeing one species, if that even though the description read "abundant wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed." Another disappointment were the talks by Glacier Bay rangers who boarded the ship when we were in Glacier Bay. They did very little narration when were were

Overall good, but excursions often not as advertised

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Wildlife Tour
Everyone was told to be at the meeting site 15 minutes early and were, yet the tour guide didn't start to get our group moving to the bus until 5 minutes past the tour start time. (He was there the whole time, just visiting with other guides.) Then he proceeded to tell us that a brown bear had been spotted at the site we were going to and hopefully it'd still be there. It wasn't. Given that our tour was in the evening (dawn and dusk are supposed to be the best viewing times), salmon were running, and this island has the highest concentration of brown bear in the world, we had hoped to see something. We were very disappointed, especially since the group could have left much sooner since everyone was there and ready. It was a very expensive bus ride and walk in the woods for our group of 4.

We had a great time (and saved money) by renting a car and seeing sites on our own.

Nice visitor center, saw sockeye salmon in the river, hiked to the glacier and fall views on our own.
