I have cruised with RCCL before and convinced my boyfriend to try out cruising after my fantastic experience on Adventure of the seas last may. We were more keen on picking a good itinerary than ship, so we went with this cruise on the Jewel of the Seas.
The embarkation in Civitavecchia went smooth and we went from taxi to the pool in under 30 minutes.
Jewel of the seas itself is a very nice ship - the amount of bars, restaurants and entertainment is more than sufficient. We managed to always find spots where we felt very private. The ship was not as clean as I’ve experienced other ships - we kept seeing glasses, plates etc. in stairs and hallways from the night before way up after midday almost everyday.
We booked through an agency and were allocated cabin a balcony cabin with a angled balcony that feels smaller than the standard balcony’s onboard - before the cruise we thought we were fine and actually didn’t give the balcony much thought - but after disembarkation we were not that amused. RCCL have chosen to furnish the balcony with one regular chair and one lounge/sunbathing chair that makes the balcony pretty much useless - the lounge/sunbathing chair was awkward to sit if we were having breakfast on the balcony (probably due to the angle of the balcony). Apart from that it’s I probably the least private balcony on the ship - you are pretty much sitting there like an exhibition at a museum. From my experience these balcony’s got to be that worst onboard and therefore I would recommend not to book it, if you have the option to book something else.
