Celebrity Edge Cruise Review by alj1208

  • Sail Date: Jul 2019
  • Destination: the Western Mediterranean
  • Cabin Type: Edge Veranda Stateroom

We had a wonderful time on this cruise, but there are some things we feel Celebrity could improve upon. We are a couple (early 50s) with a teenager. Here is our take on the experience:

-The itinerary: Amazing! Rome, Naples, Livorno/Florence, Monaco, Cannes, Majorca and Barcelona.

-The cabins: We had two connecting Infinite Veranda cabins. The cabins were light and comfortable. The connecting rooms made it possible for our teen son to have space and his own bed. He is very tall, so the trundle would not have worked. I caution families that crowding into one of these cabins can be done but would be extremely tight. The extra "bed" is a day bed with a trundle. The connecting door is in the wall between the two cabins, but if you have younger children, you would have to either have one of the adults in with them or bring something to prop open the door(s) in between the two cabins, as they shut automatically and were hard to open.

-The Infinite Veranda: Not terrible, but this is not comparable to a real veranda. Also, they open electronically, so how long before they all start to malfunction? We probably wouldn't choose Edge again for this reason.

-The family experience: There were tons of families on this cruise, and we were told, 600 children on board. We are a family, so that was fine, but if you are looking for a cruise without a lot of children, this is NOT it. If you are a family who prefers a quieter experience, this could be good, but you would be frustrated at times -- as we were -- with the crowds. The pool was so crowded every day that our son (a teen) didn't want to go in. We couldn't blame him. It didn't appeal to us either. It was murky from all the people crowding in, and the loud music was going all the time. Even the solarium pool was crowded at times with adults (often loud!) who couldn't get space in the regular pool. This is the type of thing we expected to avoid by choosing Celebrity. On the plus side, there were many activities for the whole family, and we enjoyed ourselves.

-The ship overall: Gorgeous and trendy, but the "gated community" concept of the suites and the special retreat area makes the rest of the ship feel more crowded. We have cruised Celebrity twice in the past (Constellation and Eclipse), and we never felt we were on a crowded ship. Edge had crowds EVERYWHERE.

-Dining: They really push the speciality restaurants on Edge, and we did try Eden one night. It was fine and different with the live actors, but nothing spectacular in terms of the food. Also, having four regular dining rooms means you don't have a relationship with your "regular" waiter, and the service is compromised, in our opinion. The buffet was great, but it was very crowded at peak times.

-I would never complain about having the opportunity to take such an amazing vacation on a beautiful ship to see this part of the world. We feel fortunate to have done this, and we had the time of our lives. However, I wanted to provide some balanced information for those who are considering whether to choose Edge.

-Bottom line: Edge was a good time and a gorgeous ship, and we are glad we went but would not be attracted to this ship in the future unless the itinerary was the draw.
