We have taken several ocean liner type cruises, so we didn't know how this would differ. Now, I can say EVERYTHING was wonderful and went so smoothly. The transfers to / from airport, the availability of information, the excursions, the food choices, the staff...everything was great.
We love that the excursions ran ON TIME. Our cruise director urged everyone to be early, because they don't wait for you if you're late. We've been on bigger cruises that have waited for stragglers (and then you end up losing time exploring) AND also experienced some very unorganized excursions. Not so on Avalon. Communication is clear, organized, and punctual.
Food was spectacular, loved all the wine choices with meals. Lots of choices for all kinds of eaters. Staff attentive and good at what they do. I think those servers have some of the hardest jobs anywhere.

Panorama Suite with French Balcony
The bed was very comfortable. Room was well cared for. Only complaint here was that it often smelled of cigarette smoke, and we determined that it was probably smoke coming from the smoking area on the top deck...through a vent maybe? Or maybe where staff is allowed to smoke. Ours was the very last cabin in the stern.
