Viking Jupiter – Western Europe – Barcelona to Copenhagen – April 25–May 9, 2019

For Context -

We are in our late 60’s and this was our 3rd Viking Ocean Cruise in 12 months. We did the Caribbean in February 2019 on the Viking SEA and did the Baltics Homelands Cruise on the SKY in May 2018. We consider ourselves quite mobile and enjoy tours/activities that require lots of walking and exercise. We hope to do 5 to 10 miles walking whenever we are in ports when we take cruise vacations. We have done primarily DIY trips where I planned everything and managed traveling by train or car to different hotels or B&B’s every couple nights, combined with DIY sightseeing. As we’ve aged, this certainly takes a toll on us both in the planning and the execution – so another reason for trying out cruising again after many years.

Cabin Review

Cabin DV2

We had a deluxe veranda (DV2) this time on the portside 6th floor, just down from the Launderette. We’d had a DV2 and a PV3 on the prior cruises. The DV2 was smaller than the PV3 we had before, but some good improvements made it quite nice indeed.

Pros:

Very much enjoyed that the DV2 on the Jupiter now had new drawers (versus shelves) in the closet to store clothes (the Sky did not). We felt there was plenty of room to get around and the bathroom was quite large indeed. We were able to store our suitcases and carryon bags under the bed. The bed was very comfortable – just the way we like it – firm but not too firm! The air conditioning was perfect and thermostat quite simple & easy to control – did not blow on you like in many hotel rooms. There were plenty of plug and USB outlets – never an issue there! A welcome improvement included dials to control the temperature of the heated bathroom floor. Lots of storage space in the bathroom as well.

True treat: we love coffee and thoroughly enjoyed the Nespresso machine in the room. We used it every single day and it made wonderful expressos. The coffee in the World Café was not as strong as I had hoped, but solved that problem by blending it with an Expresso cup as well.

Our room steward was outstanding! She was so helpful, professional, courteous, and considerate – always ready to help and assist us. Never an issue at all for refilling our refrigerator with items we desired, getting ice at specific times, an extra blanket as needed, getting extra Nespresso coffee pods, and wine glasses for the room.

Cons:

Not sure why, but the door to the hall had to be given a real shove to get closed. Many a time we about walked away thinking it was closed but it wasn’t. Noticed our neighbors all had the same issue. A warning to others to make sure your door truly is closed when leaving and when entering.

We were a bit bothered by the noise from above our 6th level room – early morning hours and late evening, as we were located just underneath the Pool Deck and Pool Grill. We could hear the various chairs, lounges, and tables being moved and set up each morning quite early, and each evening late. Perhaps it might have been better to be on the 5th floor. I’ve also heard people on 6th level rooms hearing the World Café outdoor deck chair and table setup noises. We also could hear our neighbor’s TV when they had it on, but perhaps they had poor hearing and had to turn up the volume, as we did not hear it from the other neighbor.

Port Reviews

Copenhagen

We’d been here before with the Viking Sky and had taken the Included walking tour. It had been quite good and gave us lots of exercise last year – but we wanted to do something different this time. Given that we planned to spend a couple more nights here after leaving the ship, we decided to venture out. As such, we did not take any Viking tours in Copenhagen, although if we had, we would have done the Rothskilde Cathdral and Viking Ship tour. We wound up taking the free Viking shuttle bus from Langelinie pier (the close pier near the Mermaid) into town, near Nyhavn Harbor. Spent the afternoon at Tivoli Gardens-an easy walk. Then took one of the Canal Cruises – the weather turned cold windy and bitter but it was still a fascinating cruise. I believe Viking optional tours has it – and it would be well worth it to be sure. That evening (our last on the ship), the Copenhagen Harbor made the Jupiter change ports to the farther out Oceankaj pier. This was because the closer pier is normally used only for ships that do not disembark/embark or stay the night. So another couple mile quick cruise. On disembarking at the end of the cruise the next day, we then took the bus from Oceankaj into town and to our hotel. Must say that Viking handled the disembarkation quite smoothly and efficiently.

Cartagena (Spain)

One of the more disappointing tours. We did the included tour. It is luck of the draw on who you get for a guide, as we spoke to friends who were on other buses who had fantastic tours! Very inconsistent. Our guide had a difficult time with English and didn’t go much beyond what was necessary. A highlight though was the visit to the Roman Amphitheatre and Museum. Just wish we had more time there. We enjoyed then wandering around the city streets on our own, finding a nice shop to get some Spanish wine to bring onboard. The Jupiter docked right in town -easy walking distance.
