Captain Tuvo (aka Capt. Bye Bye)

Star Princess Cruise Review by Murrhers

Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Mar 2019
  • Destination: the South Pacific
  • Cabin Type: Oceanview (obstructed view)

We chose this twice a year itinerary because we wanted to see Hawaii and French Polynesia. The Star is older but clean and a manageable size. Our obstructed view 8th deck cabin was conveniently located, and we had a pretty good view. I have to say that my husband is a picky eater so we chose the Horizon Court more than the dining room. When we went to the DR, the service was good. Entertainment: good comedians, OK singers. The entertainment staff were mostly English as a second language speakers and this negatively affected some communication and particularly the trivia questions, which were often awkwardly structured.

But...Captain Bye Bye! We’ve never experienced a captain that mingled with the masses like Capt. Tuvo. He established a good rapport from day one. Each day he was out and about SPEAKING with the passengers. We looked forward to his noon reports each day, which he’d finish with: “Nevertheless, Bye Bye!”

We enjoyed all the ports except, surprisingly, Papeete. It was dirty and heavily trafficked. It was the only port we wished we had less time, but it was the longest, probably due to resupplying.

Would I do the same itinerary again? Yes, but I’d probably choose more independent tours.

Cabin Review

Oceanview (obstructed view)
Cabin OV B608

It was a typical obstructed view cabin. The bed was comfortable but beginning to sag where people have obviously sat on it. Clean. We requested another chair in addition to the desk chair. Cooling system was good.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Small group, very informative tour guide.

Diamond Head Crater

It was basically a bus ride to Diamond Head with admission included. We did a private tour company afterwards and learned their tour of Diamond Head was half the cost and the tour guided walked up with the group. We did Oahu nature tours to the Manoa Falls. It was very good!

Very nice tour. A long boat ride to a bay, a barbecue lunch, very friendly staff. And we saw whales on the way back.

Island Tour

Big bus tour. Exhaust fumes, tight quarters, and noisy. We went across the island to a waterfall and coconut demonstration. Then across the island to a beach for an hour. Lunch was fruit and a coconut. Would do a private tour next time,

A catamaran Snorkeling tour. The staff didn't tell us they had Snorkeling gear until we had reached the Snorkeling spot and I asked them. Then t8me was water gearing everyone up.

Same catamaran operation as the day before, but this time I knew to get the gear out prior to stopping at the site.

Small motor boat took us to 3 Snorkeling spots. Loved the tour guide. A native of the island, he dove down to look for fish and point things out. We say many wonderful fish. The only drawback was the exit out of and entry onto the boat: for seniors it was a challenge. Next time I'd check out the type of boat before booking.
