We took a cruise on the NCL Breakaway with 4 of our friends, so a party of 6 total in 3 different rooms. All 3 parties in one way or another booked the all-inclusive internet/dining/drink packages and several excursions with a small exception here and there. Overall our group experience was unpleasant. In total this group has been on more than 20 cruises on multiple cruise lines including previous NCL experiences.

From day 1 the internet was a problem. 3 members of our group ended up going to the internet café to get help with the internet, and we were unsuccessful. The internet would work for a few minutes or not at all. A few members of our group spent several hours at the internet café trying to find someone knowledgeable to resolve the problems. Finally, on Saturday, the issues were resolved. When you have 20 – 40 people in line for help at the internet café you have 1 or 2 basic problems. Usability of your app and internet connections. Not enough knowledgeable staff to help.

In general, the food was ok, nothing to write home about on the ship. I will highlight the highs and lows of the week for the group. So, let’s first start with the highlights: The Main Dining room. These people; your staff, are without a doubt, perfection! We wanted nor waited for nothing, ever. The smallest of details was taken care of before we could even ask, bread, butter rolls, and even the main course was incredible.

Japanese steakhouse, excellent food! Chef was fantastic, entertaining, and inventive – not your normal Japanese steakhouse experience. The staff was another story, our waitress was nowhere to be found most of the evening, and like most events on a cruise chip timing is EVERYTHING. We told our waitress that we had booked a show for the group and needed to be done in time to go to the show. When we needed to leave we could not find our waitress anywhere. We finally contacted a manager, and in total waited about 30 minutes to get our ship card back so we could not leave, and we missed the start of the show! NCL, please do not hold your passengers’ hostage because your staff is on a smoke break or whatever!

Cagney Steakhouse, again excellent food! We arrived early and asked if we could sit together, after first checking with Dining Reservation Desk to make sure asking such a thing was acceptable. The Dining Reservation Desk assured us it was not a problem to sit 6 people together. When we arrived and checked in for our reservation they had major problems accommodating our request and we were told to sit at the bar and wait a few minutes. Not a problem, we arrived early! 40 minutes later we were not addressed, looked at or acknowledged. We had to go back up to the reservation desk at the restaurant and ask if our table was ready, we were told to go to the end of the line at which point I reminded them that our party has been waiting for 40 minutes patiently. They had forgotten all about us. After waiting some more, a manager spoke to us, some panicking staff ran about and we were seated and had a good meal. Completely missed our show that night too by the time we were done with dinner.

All of the other restaurants we ate at were nothing to write home about in terms of food, some meals were fantastic, and others were cold and unimpressive to inedible and were sent back. Overall the service was poor at all restaurants EXCEPT the main dining room.

Bars: Sine we were on vacation and had the soda pop and alcohol unlimited packages we did indeed have, or shall I say try to have some adult libations. The presentations of the drinks were great! The bar and waiter / waitress services were poor and incredibly slow. The drinks all tasted great but took forever to get! A single drink at the pool, the upper deck, inside bar, outside bar, anywhere would take anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes. It did not matter what you ordered a can of beer or a complicated mixed drink. The service was poor and slow. Tracking down a waiter at the pool bar was like trying to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Running out of and drinks, oh yes you did! About Friday afternoon or so a few of the bars reported that they were out of “diet” pop and then like a miracle they had more! What we observed and tasted was that they were mixing water with regular soda and calling it diet! By Saturday the outages were at all bars and restaurants and you could not even get a coke or diet coke or sprite! So not only did you have to wait a long long time to get a drink, you would get to the front of the line and order something with the potential or blowing your blood sugar out of the water and praying your insulin was nearby or try your luck at another bar and wait again, and again only to be disappointed. Some people cannot have sugar, quinine, or phenylalanine some people have allergies, your cannot substitute without communication.

One of our waiters on the beach spilled a a try of drinks and waters in the sand and just left them there. He never came back to clean up, and we had to track him down to get more drinks the he spilled and again to get our ship card back!
