Travelled on the West Indies Explorer itinery in February as we prefer to minimise sea days and had heard good reviews about Viking. The pre cruise hotel in San Juan was poor and Viking have since acknowledged this. Our cabin was nice but lacked storage space the bathroom was very good. The pool area was small and cramped possibly due to the location of the winter garden which was a waste of valuable space only being used for an hour a day for afternoon tea. The retractable roof however was very good. The ship rolled constantly even in calm seas. The main restaurant is poorly designed along the sides of the ship. Tables are close together so effectively all tables are shared tables and you have to squeeze between diners to get to some tables. Food ranged from mediocre to excellent and service ranged from average to very poor. There were lots of staff in the restaurant but they appeared to be inexperienced with service very slow and chaotic. Trying to get wine other than the house wine via the drinks package was a challenge every time. Service in the lounges was also poor where there were simply not enough bar staff to cope with demand. Included excursions were also poor subjecting guests to 40 minute stops at tacky souvenir shops and ice cream parlours. Entertainment was very sedate the shows were poor and other entertainment mainly consisted of a pianist and classical duo. The band were good but only performed before 11pm a couple of times. These events were well attended and Its a pity they didn’t do more. I provided comprehensive mid cruise feedback which wasn’t acknowledged. I wouldn’t sail with Viking again.

Disappointing
