The highlight of this cruise was definitely the food; however the entertainment and service are also a very positive aspect. We noticed some very positive characteristics of NCL (tried only Carnival and Royal Caribbean before): - the staff will always greet you / say hi if you are passing by. - the check-in process was super efficient (despite a big confusion upon boarding). - the cabin steward would make up the room twice a day - freestyle cruising is the best: you eat where you want, when you want and dressing what you want! All the restaurants onboard the Getaway had impressive food quality and flawless service. We tried only one specialty (Moderno) and it was also incredible, the endless meet cooked to perfection and cut in front of you at your table is definitely a unique experience, if you go don't forget to try the cheese buns, simply warm, sticky and crunchy at the same time. We found Savour and Taste to be very similar but ended up going more to Taste as it's menu changes from night to night (definitely book ahead). O'Sheehan's was also great, with good options and one of the best hotdogs I ever had. The overall dinning experience on this ship was the best I ever had on a cruise. The staff is a show apart! We had a few senior with zero English knowledge who sometimes took longer to decide their order. Not a problem! Every day, the restaurant staff would go above and beyond to understand and make accommodations. Another highlight of this vacation was the entertainment aboard. In the same time there was a duo singing in a bar; live band in the atrium; DJ in the disco; another DJ in the outdoor nightclub; duelling piano in the theatre. The options were endless and crafted to all tastes. We were on a diverse group with no children and everyone really enjoyed. Our cruise director, Paquito, was a bit loud in the parties, but funny. The asst. cruise director Joey was quite a character and fun too. We wanted to try the stand up comedy show as other fellow cruisers have enjoyed, but the options were so many we didn't have time. I will cover cabin in the cabin session, but our location couldn't be better. We selected deck 14 AFT right below garden cafe. We used to grab a cup of coffee or tea and bring a level down to our balcony with some pastries! Fantastic! We did the Mayan ruins shore excursion at Costa Maya and the 3 Reef snorkeling at Cozumel. The Mayan ruins was simply fantastic, we had tons of fun and learned a lot with our guide Daniel "el Jaguar", another character who made our trip unforgettable. The 3 reef snorkel we didn't really like, the tour guide was nice and the boat crew too, however the location is too busy, you feel scared of being run over by a boat; plus you only see real fish when the guy who takes pictures with the camera feeds then. Since we are mentioning shore excursions, it is about time for Norwegian and other cruise lines to stop supporting animal related excursions. It hurts me to see in Costa Maya (and other destinations, but CM had right in the port), Dolphins; Flamingos; Macaws; amongst other animals, confined on very small space for tourists to come and take photos. This animal abuse has to stop. Some excursions even involve you hugging a sloth or taking photos with a parrot on your shoulder, those animals should be in the nature and not passing around in the arms of the more than 4K passengers. on a stressful situation. It is also great to see NCL going strawless! Time to get rid of the disposable cups now, eh? Last but not least, the boarding process was delayed by almost one hour, what is the point on assigning a check-in time if you can only board 2 hours later? There is absolutely no point complaining on stuff such as: the ship itself (there is plenty of info on the internet, do your research before buying); the ports of call (also a passenger's decision); the time of the year and so on...

Cabin Review

Balcony Stateroom
Cabin BC 14248
Average size. I would recomend you chose the ones which has the sofa first and the bed close-by the window, why? The space between the closet and whatever is in front of it (sofa or bed) is super narrow, so if you have the sofa it is just easier to more around. The bathroom is one of the best I had while cruising. The balcony is indeed way smaller than average.

  • Chacchoben Mayan Ruins
The tour was really nice, the ruins are more surrounded by nature than the ones in Chichen Itza (less people too). Out guide Daniel "the Jaguar" was very informative and extremely helpful + quite a character! If you have him as your guide, ask him to the the "Jaguar Roar" an you'll dye laughing.

  • Snorkeling
The tour guide and the boat crew were fantastic hard working people. They tried their best to make sure everyone was having a great time. However, the locations of the 3 reef snorkel are pretty lame. Too close to other boats you feel scared a boat will pass over you. Fish? Only a few and mostly when the guy of the waterproof camera comes to take a photo of you (he feeds them).

Tourist traps everywhere. We went straight to the beach, as swimming pool we have at home. The beach was OK

We did a city tour, zipline and stopped for a beach day in Roatan. Our guide Jaime was nice and helpful with very good tips and ideas. Be careful if you have any seniors in your group as getting to the zipline is a bit steep and tricky
