We took this cruise as part of a specific group, so neither the ship nor the itinerary was our choice. That said, we had a good time overall and give Royal Caribbean an A- for the experience.
The Ship: The ship is older than most we sail, and it’s age shows. Colors/decoration are dated. The ship has been updated, but with heavy use it is in need of some tweaks. Carpets are worn, furniture is sometimes stained, and sheets/towels are showing wear. The ship is clean, however metal deterioration is visible under paint, paint is scuffed, etc. Nothing major, but if you expect a new, glitzy ship, Adventure isn’t for you. The big plus for us, after having last sailed RC on the Allure, is it’s smaller size. The layout is somewhat similar, just on a more human scale. There were times it felt crowded, but overall no more so than Allure. Elevators were inconsistent, but generally adequate.
The Dining: The food was better than we expected. The main dining room was very good, considering they serve ~2,000 meals at each setting. The specialty restaurants were very good - we had the 3-meal package - and both Izumi and Chops served very good food with excellent service. We enjoyed the Chef’s Table food/wine pairing very much, however the venue on this ship is not ideal - it is a small half-level in the main dining room, so it is too loud to hear the chef’s descriptions clearly and enjoy visiting with others at the 12-person table. The buffet was fine for breakfast/lunch - both changed little during the week, but the food was freshly-made and plentiful, and the service was the best we have experienced in a mass-market ship buffet.
Service throughout the ship was top notch. Special shout-outs to Iputu at the Promenade coffee bar (can’t imagine how he remembered my name, but after day 2 he called me by my name and remembered my husband’s name BEFORE I ordered. Are you listening RC? - this man deserves a promotion!), and our room steward, Nahroni, was very gracious and efficient - he always greeted us with a smile and a minute to catch up, no matter the time of day. The room stewards are very busy on RC ships, but we never waited for our room to be made up or lacked for anything in our cabin.
That brings me to the survey RC sends out online. There is no place to thank special people, only places to note failures. Come on, RC, you’re missing an opportunity to find your best people. A very ‘corporate’ approach to a very human experience.
Embarkation: It was among the best we have experienced. Quick and efficient (we had filled out the online registry, with photo, so they had little to do at check in. A tip: take a taxi/Uber from your hotel to the port rather than shuttles from nearby hotels for a faster boarding at nearly the same cost - the shuttles stop at all the ships and Adventure is farthest from the hotels.
Debarkation: It was a nightmare. Took over 3 hours after our scheduled debarkation time to actually complete the process. Only 4 customs agents for nearly 3,000 passengers, but that is a port problem the cruise line cannot impact. Fort Lauderdale is very busy and experiencing growing pains. Be sure you have an extra dose of patience on debarkation day. The good news - the airport is upgrading, and our departure on Southwest was in a brand new and spacious facility.
We have cruised over 10 times, with several lines, including upscale providers. That is enough to make the best decision for us, and we would sail RC and Adventure again if the group/itinerary were right.
Storage adequate for us. Soft surfaces (carpet, sofa, linens, etc) somewhat worn, but clean. Bed adequate but not luxurious. Lighting could be better, but it was adequate.
