We had long wanted to visit many of the ports included in the Viking Homelands experience, but have, previously, planned our own travel trying to avoid anywhere with a ship in port! However, the prospect of smaller numbers and all-inclusive travel appealed, and we thoroughly enjoyed our first cruise experience!
We cannot speak highly enough of the service we received! Embarkation was a breeze, the cabin every bit as lovely as the brochures promised, and the Sun itself is a work of art! Food was outstanding and the entertainment first class, whether in the public areas or theatre! We danced every night at Torshavn till they kicked us out!!! Travelling with another couple added enjoyment (we Aussies swept all before us at trivia!!) but we often went our own ways when in port and made many new friends.
Unfortunately we lost two ports (and gained extra sea days) due to the weather, but this actually gave us more time to relax after busy times ashore.
We did most included excursions, some of which were excellent, several optional ones with Viking and a brilliant two days in St Petersburg through Alla Tours (saw so much in a small group).
It's expensive but we are so glad we took the plunge that we've just booked another!
Such a delightful place to call home for a fortnight! Bed was very comfortable (pillows too) and the decor stylish and uncluttered! Very glad we booked the Penthouse Verandah; we appreciated the extra roominess as well as the ironing service and minibar inclusions! There was so much storage space and the ports slid under the bed.
The bathroom was lovely, with heated floors and indulgent bath products. Robes and slippers too!
Water and ice were regularly replaced and the wonderful 'house elves' unobtrusively kept the room looking as if we'd just arrived!
Really enjoyed the morning! The Drive was scenic and the village worth visiting. We enjoyed the included morning tea. We had done our research and headed out of the old town and up a nearby hill where there are site of historical significance and great views. The walk back along the water was glorious! We still had plenty of time to get a good look around the village.
We had one stop in central Helsinki and my only disappointment is that the Drive didn't swing past the Sebelius monument and Rock Church to give us a glimpse!View All 55 Old Town Porvoo Reviews
Totally recommended! After lots of research we picked Alla and are so glad we did! We had two whirlwind days with pocket rocket Svetlana, who really knew her stuff and maximised each minute. We 'did' the Hermitage, Catherine Palace, Peterhoff Gardens, St Isaacs and the Church on Spilled Blood, had a subway ride and river cruise, a flash restaurant lunch one day and a picnic on the bus another! We were a small group (16) and never felt rushed despite the pace! Excellent value!View All 204 Private Tour Reviews
Boarded an old Soviet bus and learned a lot about life under Communist rule! Saw the sights, consumed quantities of Vodka and pickles, and seesawed between uproarious laughter and moments of great sobriety! Recommended!View All undefined undefined Reviews
We had mooted doing this ourselves on local transport, but caved to the convenience of joining the tour! I'm glad we did because the monastery we visited first was very impressive and historically relevant. We enjoyed the steam train ride through the countryside and the coffee and cake at the beachside hotel. There was ample free time to explore the town or stroll on the beach. (Proper sand!!)View All 8 Bad Doberan Reviews
This was a freebie, and we enjoyed it more than we anticipated. Rostock is a charming place to explore and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We also had time to wander about pretty Warnemunde before lunch!View All 41 Rostock City Tour Reviews
Long walk and easily done independently, but it's nice to get the input from the guide, and it was a freebie! Some of the group peeled away and hopped on, hopped off for the day but we did the whole circuit and jumped the shuttle back into town to explore all afternoon!View All undefined undefined Reviews
A little research revealed that the Pulpit Rock cruise left from the same dock as the Sun berthed! So booking direct was a cost saving measure (as long as we arrived on time, which we did!) Lots of fellow Viking passengers had similar thoughts!
We enjoyed the cruise and Grieg's music which wafted out at certain times! However, I must say I thought Pulpit Rock would be bigger!!!!View All 76 Pulpit Rock Reviews
Did this included walk late afternoon so we checked out the direction it headed in the morning and did our own exploring in the other direction! That way we didn't cover too much of the same turf! (There is a lovely lake with swans to stroll around!)
We enjoyed the old town and found the Petrolium Museum to be surprisingly engaging! Probably wouldn't have gone in on our own, so glad we were part of the tour!View All 57 The Old Town Reviews
Considering that we had been exploring Stockholm on our own for a few days before boarding the Sun, we were surprised at how much we enjoyed this tour! We stopped at places we hadn't got to, and heard new information about places we had!View All 141 City Tour Reviews
We were lucky with the autumn sunshine! Took the cruise as part of the Stockholm Card and really enjoyed it.View All 17 Royal Canal Tour Reviews
