This is a review of a recent trip on the new Holland America Line (HAL) ship Nieuw Statendam (a Pinnacle Class ship).

Our trip was not a typical HAL cruise, but rather a week-long musical event that happened to take place on a cruise ship. It was the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise (LRBC) #32, a celebration of several related musical styles (boogie-woogie, blues, zydeco, etc.). If you are not a fan of these types of music, this trip is definitely NOT for you.

NOTE: Our overall rating does not reflect our true opinion of the ship, because we travelled under completely different conditions than we would expect to experience on a typical HAL cruise, and some of the facilities were not available (for example, Lido Pool aft). Consequently, although we would have expected to award maximum points for a trip on a ship that has been in service barely 8 weeks we believe we would be disingenuous if we did so.

The LRBC organization charters the entire ship for one week. Because we booked the trip through the LRBC organisers (you don’t have an option) we had a limited choice of cabins (better cabins are offered first to repeat LRBC passengers) so we opted for an Inside Spa cabin on deck 10.

With hindsight this was not a location we would choose again, nor would we suggest it to any other passengers, for the simple reason that it is an incredibly small space. There is barely adequate room for two average-sized adults. The cabin includes two single beds, two bedside tables and a desk/dressing table. It should be a Solo cabin.

The bathroom is tiny, probably because the fully-glassed in shower takes up at least 30% of the available space. There is a limited amount of storage space for toiletries and medicines, and the towel rails are so small that you are unable to hang a large bath towel on them to allow it to dry. The usable floor space in front of the toilet is smaller than a bath mat.

Being so far away from the waterline makes the cabin prone to movement as the ship steams along. This did not seem to be the familiar combination of pitching/rolling/ yawing motion but a strange kind of tremor. Other passengers described it as a ‘jitter’, a ‘shimmy’, or a ‘waggle’. Nobody told us it made them feel queasy, but several people told us the tremor kept them awake at nights. The strange movement was most pronounced on higher decks at both ends of the ship. Perhaps the stabilizers were engaged unnecessarily for the entire cruise?

Our cabin stewards Manuel and Dany were excellent –happy, friendly and very efficient.
