Review of Equinox Sailing 11Nights 03-08-2010 to 03-19-2010

Boarding: Having driven from North Carolina and spent the Weekend in South Florida with Friends who were also on this sailing, we had arranged with Park 'n Go in Ft. Lauderdale to store our car for the cruise. We dropped off and checked our luggage, parked the car, and took the free shuttle back to the Port. We checked in using our Express Pass and were on board with no hassle at all. We had lunch in the buffet and then were able to start getting our cabin organized. Our checked luggage was delivered very promptly.

Stateroom: We were in 6312 which is a central Sunset Veranda right aft. This particular vertical row of cabins does have a wider veranda (about 3 feet wider) than the other SV's. There is no difference in veranda depth, but the veranda is certainly usable and comfortable. The in-suite bathroom is compact, but efficiently laid out with one of the roomiest showers we've seen on a ship. There is limited storage in the bath and very limited counter area. One new addition which I did like was the provision of a night light in the bath which I found useful. The main stateroom area is listed as 194 sq feet ( I assume that includes the bathroom), the same as the Concierge Class staterooms on the M Class Ships. Given that, I have to say that the M Class staterooms are far better laid out and have far better storage available. The Equinox stateroom had 5 drawers in a desk-cabinet combination which also contained the safe and the ubiquitous mini-bar, the latter two taking up as much room as the available drawer storage. There are no drawers in the otherwise useful double closets, and the only other storage is a double closed shelf over the bed. This additions space is useful, although anyone shorter than my 5'6 1/2" height would probably have to stand on the bed to access it. There are no real night tables; each side of the bed has a very small 3 shelf triangular unit, the top shelf of one of which is just about fully occupied by the phone. The other shelves would hold a paperback book or so but not a lot more. The dominate feature in the cabin is what is euphemistically described as a "sofa". What this is is a thinly disguised 3rd berth in the cabin. The temptation to use this as additional storage is strong, but I preferred to leave it as uncluttered as possible so that the cabin could be more pleasant. The one thing that I could not do was to sit on it comfortably; it is clearly not designed to be sat upon for any length of time and not usable ( at least for me) to either read or to watch television. There was a small table in front of the "sofa" which to me served only to intrude into the already limited walkway in the cabin. In summary, I consider the cabin design, layout and storage to be much poorer than the corresponding M Class cabins of the same size which I find to be much more comfortable. If I wanted to be cynical about it, I might draw the conclusion that some of the design parameters were laid out with the view towards encouraging people to spend as little time in the cabin as possible, for whatever reason.

Cabin Review

Sunset Veranda

Cabin SV

6312 ( and the cabins directly above it) have a wider veranda by about 3 feet than the other SV cabins. The depth is the same, just wider.

On the S Class ships, the SV cabins are a LONG way from the stairs and elevators and this should be considered by anyone who has difficulty in walking.

Cabin is quiet, we noticed no extraneous noise or any unpleasant odors.
