My sister and I choose this cruise due to our desire to see Russia. Our other motivation was Viking was offering free airfare in the year 2018 for this cruise.

The ship shape is differ from the long ships Viking uses for their other river cruises. But once the cruise was started and we could feel the open waters we were cruising we understood the reason why.

We absolutely loved our cruise. The biggest factor contributing to this result, other than the amazing Russian cites we visited , was the crew onboard the Akun. They went above and beyond to make sure each passenger was enjoying themselves. Those working the front desk went to great extremes to accommodate a special sightseeing request that my sister and I had to tour the Hermitage storage facility.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Outside Stateroom

Cabin CX

The cabin did not have a veranda but a large window that pulled down. To my surprise we did not miss having a veranda, which we have had in the past. We were just to busy.

The size was slightly larger than the DX and had no poles in the center of the room. Due to the length of the cruise we felt the extra space was advantageous.

My only complaint was one particular night there was a lot of noise going through a lock, which I assume was from the engines. But I found out the engines were located in the opposite end of the ship. So unsure what was causing the noise. Unclear if you had a room higher up if the noise would have been as loud.

Port Reviews

St. Petersburg

We were there early so we got to enjoy the welcome serenade by the band. It also allowed us first entry. The amber room is truly impressive as well as the throne room.

St. Petersburg

The city tour was very informative. It included detailed information on the important sites as well a ride on the subway. Very scary for me due to the amount feet the subway is underground.. But so glad I did it as the stations were so beautiful.

St. Petersburg

The museum itself houses some of the most important works of art. It was very crowded even though we were there early so in order to see the most famous works you need to be prepared to deal with pushing and shoving by the other tourists.

St. Petersburg

The gardens were my favorite part of the visit. Absolutely stunning. I was glad we had time on our own to explore the gardens and to see all that they hold
