  • Destination: Transatlantic

The Viking Sun is an absolutely gorgeous ship, furnished with Norwegian taste which is sleek and elegant in nautical blue and silver-beige. The public spaces are large and comfortable and beautiful, and don't seem crowded because there are so many of them. Free access to high-end spa featuring Nordic options like a heated mineral water spa, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and snow room. The crew knows how to show you a good time and make it seem effortless. Food was extraordinary, with several restaurants to choose from, and menus that varied every day featuring local items like tapas while in Spain. Room service is also available 24 hours. And the excursions were managed efficiently and hosted by the best local tour guides. There is an included excursion in every port, plus many optional ones to choose from. Being in the Mediterranean in the off season was delightful. My friends commented that our photos showed well because they sights weren't overcrowded like they are in the summer months. The cruise was exquisite in every way.

Cabin Review

Cabin Jr Penthouse Suite 8003

This cabin is big and beautiful. Just steps away from the upper level of the Explorers Lounge, which felt like our personal living room. There are about 10 cabins on this hallway so it felt very private and tucked away. No jostling crowds in the elevator lobby. It's a longish walk to dining rooms, which we didn't mind, but I wouldn't recommend this cabin location for those with mobility issues.

Pisa Walking Tour

Covered the basics of the area and explained the historical importance of Pisa. The guide was careful to warn us about pickpockets and to keep them away from our group, which was much appreciated, as they can be insistent.

We had a photo stop overlooking the Nice coastline, then on to a drive-around downtown Nice. We stopped at the market and were given free time to explore the markets and the area. Then an arranged lunch at a cozy restaurant, featuring fresh local foods. Next on to the Musee Matisse, a city-owned museum. The museum does not have any of his important works, only some lesser works, but the guide was very knowledgeable about his total career and made the best of what was on display when we visited.

Our ship was diverted to Sete, France due to expected civil disturbances at Marseilles. With only one day's notice, Viking arranged for guided walking tours of this charming and unspoiled port city. We enjoyed it as much as if it were always part of the itinerary.

What an impressive city! The conversion of a dry river bed to the City of Arts and Sciences is nothing less than amazing. The buildings, designed by Calatrava, were gorgeous and so photogenic. We enjoyed strolling along the park and taking it all in, just like the locals.

Rome (Civitavecchia)

The eternal city. Everyone must visit in their lifetime.

We enjoyed our free time in Toulon, walking on our own to the market and the Christmas market that was set up in a city square within walking distance of the ship.

Gaudi Walking Tour

Barcelona puts a lot of stock in their Gaudi monuments, so it's important to see them and appreciate the grandeur that is found only here.

Cartagena (Spain)

An ancient Roman city with a recently discovered Roman forum. You ask how could it recently discovered? A photo in the museum shows how it looked 20 years ago before it was excavated, where a street had actually been built over the Roman ruins, and was then rediscovered centuries later.

Malaga City Tour

Charming old city.

Legendary Seville

Seville is teeming with history, who knew? The guides (one full-day, plus one local guide in Seville) shared so much of the history. I was so impressed with the Tomb of Christopher Columbus in the Seville Cathedral that I've been showing that photo to all my fiends.

Jeronimos Monastery

Beautiful place, described by a loving local guide. We also enjoyed the free time downtown Lisbon at the end of the tour, which was after dark in December. The Christmas lights were on, and the locals were all out enjoying a balmy December evening. It was our only outdoors-at-night time on the cruise, and we loved it.
