Oosterdam Cruise Review by SteveKohn

Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Dec 2018
  • Destination: the Eastern Caribbean
  • Cabin Type: Neptune Deluxe Verandah Suite

We chose this cruise because it was an extension of one organized by a group and we decided that we should spend another two weeks on the ship. We are experienced cruisers (more than 20) and we decided that we wanted to use the ship as a luxury hotel rather than a way of seeing tourist attractions in the Caribbean.

The inside and the outside of the ship are beautiful. The traditional black hull and white superstructure and the strong and pointed bough are beautiful to look at. The ship was immaculate on the outside decks and beautifully designed on the inside.

There was not a crewmember with whom we interacted who deserved less than excellent rating.

We had a few meals in the main dining room because we had a Neptune suite that entitled us to use the Pinnacle Grill. Even if you have one or two meals at the Grill you will find the service and the cuisine excellent. The dining room, where we had seven dinners was okay, but not great. We found the Lido grill noisy and that the combination of dozens of different foods created a smell that was not pleasant for us.

We love classical music and there was an opportunity to hear it on the ship and while the comedian was not to our taste, the magician was fantastic.

When there were problems, the ship's crew did an excellent job in solving them.

Cabin Review

Neptune Deluxe Verandah Suite
Cabin SA 7057

This is the second largest cabin on the ship and it was beautiful. The veranda was wider than that on Crystal and the fact that there was one the large room gave a feeling of space. Paying for this type of room entitled us to use the Neptune Lounge and we were delighted to eat many of our lunches and snacks from its tasty selection. The team there provided all of the services that would typically be frowned at the front desk and every request was answered perfectly

The only negative about the room was the size of the stall shower. The solution was simple – use the shower associated with the bathtub. This size room entitles the user to complete laundry and dry cleaning service at no cost. While this voyage was an experiment with Holland America, it passed with flying colors and we signed up for another cruise and put a deposit down for summer 2019, and because of a well thought out program we are waiting to choose three more cruises

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

Island Tour

The tour was a ride to the top of the highest point on the island. The vehicle to get us there made as set an open cart loaded on the back of a large pickup. There was no safety belt and since we both sat at the end of a row there was no protection. I've addressed this issue with Holland America. Theoretically the view from the top of the island is beautiful, but there is a huge tourist shopping store which takes up most of the summit. However, the views or very good. The roads were primitive, without guardrails and not advisable for nervous tourists.

A fascinating trip through the Everglades. We saw an alligator, many birds and then going through the small zoo. An enjoyable trip with a fine guide.
