Norwegian Star Cruise Review by Jas321
- Sail Date: August 2018
- Destination: Mediterranean
We were on the cruise immediately after the lady went overboard and as such embarkation was a total mess. We arrived at the cruise terminal at around 11am at which time the ship was not there. The next few hours were spent sitting in the cruise terminal waiting for the ship and eventually to board (we had the option to go back into Venice, but it was very hot and we wanted to be at the front of the line to get on the ship, so we stayed). It was evident that the staff were not prepared for this situation, but they did give us biscuits and water and open up another seating area for the extra people. Once the ship arrived, we eventually managed to check-in (after having spent many hours standing in line). After this we were given a number and were promptly called to board, so we were on the ship by 7pm. Obviously this was not the start to our cruise that we wanted, but I wouldn't blame NCL for this as the circumstances were completely out of their control and unprepared for.
We were staying in a mini-suite on deck 11. It was a very spacious, well-appointed room with plenty of storage space, a large balcony, as well as a sizeable bathroom. Our stateroom steward, Freddie, was fantastic. He was always very friendly and polite and kept our room very clean and tidy throughout the cruise.
We were lucky to be sailing on this ship just after it was out of drydock, so everywhere was well furnished with modern decor. The ship is a good size with lots of great facilities - however, it was sad that the watersides had been removed during the refit and during the day the one, fairly small, pool was always packed.
We ate in the main dining rooms (Aqua and Versailles) most nights, as well as the steakhouse and O'Sheehan's. In the MDRs, there was always a wide variety on the menu and the food was tasty. However, is was very disappointing that half way through the cruise the chocolate lava cake was removed from the dessert menu- something I have become accustomed to on my previous cruises! The steakhouse was excellent and we enjoyed O'sheehan's too.
There was lots of things going on throughout the cruise which was good fun. The Cruise Director, Tom and his staff were very good. The white party was great!
All the staff were delightful and helpful. At mealtimes, food was usually served promptly, however it was rather slow and a little chaotic in O'Sheehan's.
The entertainment throughout this cruise was very good. The Stardust theater is excellent, with ample seating and good views of the stage. The main stage shows were all very good.
Ports & Shore Excursions:
This cruise itinerary was great! Unfortunately, due to the time lost because of the woman going overboard on the previous cruise, we had to miss our stop in Kotor, Montenegro which was very disappointing, but I understand this was out of NCL's control.
In Corfu, we took a very interesting tour to the Achilleon Palace which was beautiful, but rather crowded.
Santorini was absolutely stunning! We were there with 6 other ships so it was very crowded, by it was still a very enjoyable experience. Also, we decided to walk down the steps to the tender rather than the cable car as the line was very long- this was very hard work!
Mykonos was very enjoyable and quiet- we visited a beach and the main town square.
In Dubrovnik, we did the Tuk Tuk ride to the top of the cable car station (where we had fantastic views of the city) and then back down to the city for a short walking tour and some free time. This was a great excursion with an excellent guide.
We had a shore excursion booked in Venice for when we disembarked. As such, we were able to get off the ship very quickly and easily.
Overall, this was a great cruise. We really enjoyed the ship and our stateroom. The ports were all fantastic, it was sad to miss Kotor, but we understand the circumstances. This was our 2nd cruise with NCL and we look forward to our next one!
