We wanted to celebrate our anniversary someplace slightly exotic, so the West Indies and South America seemed a good choice. The timing was right, the amenities were good, the price was affordable, and although we were new to Viking, we had friends and family who had been well pleased with the company.
It was nice to know that the ship would be in port an extra day in case we had difficulty making connections. No need to find a hotel when arriving the night before. We brought carry on luggage, only, having heard horror stories of lost luggage. Free laundry service was available on board, though we didn't need to use it.
There was no additional charge for the bottled water we requested daily. There seemed to be food available most of the time though we tried (and failed) not to overindulge. The main restaurant served a varied menu daily. As I do not eat red meat, my husband was delighted to partake of delicious, according to him, prime rib. My only criticism here would be the lack of many vegetarian options. Lots of gluten free food, however. We met two other couples through Cruise Critic and enjoyed one another's company for the entire trip, including most dinners.
Some shore excursions were better than others, naturally. The walking tour of Old San Juan was outstanding. Long bus tours were sometimes tedious. There is not a huge amount of entertainment available, as on one of the "behemoth of the seas" type ships, but there was enough to keep us active. Once or twice there was not enough seating. The pools are small. Neither of us used them. Disembarkation went smoothly, but the flight was really out of the way and uncomfortable. It's our main criticism of the trip.
Our cabin was upgraded so we were on the 8th deck only one flight above the World Cafe, and the smaller Mamsen's, which was very convenient. The cabin was spacious and the veranda "see through" so that we could did not have a railing to obscure the view when we were seated. The bathroom was comfortably designed and the bathroom had heated floors and plenty of hot water. The shower even had a clothes line for convenience. I liked the drawers under the bathroom counter for essentials.
Everything was kept very clean. The crew were super friendly.
The guide was the highlight of the tour. Loved her talk about the fort.View All 182 Walking Tour of Old San Juan Reviews
