This is DH's and my 14th cruise with NCL, the fifth on Norwegian Pearl, four of them with Captain Lars Bengtsson. We only cruise NCL as we have been so satisfied with the beauty of the ships, the cleanliness, the camaraderie of the officers and crews, and the general feeling one has when dealing with NCL. From our wonderful PCC in Mesa, our fabulous GECs in Miami, and those at the port, it starts long before you board the ship—that feeling that you're going to visit friends and family that you really like being with.
On Thursday we flew from Portland, OR, to Seattle, WA, on Horizon Airlines and then Alaska Airlines direct to Miami. Our flight arrived late at night so we opted for the hotel shuttle to Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott at the airport (11th and Le Jeune Rd). This is a hotel that we particularly like as the restaurant across the street (Catch of the Day) is a favorite of ours. We used Friday to relax and repack our bags for boarding Norwegian Pearl on Saturday.
Embarkation: We took a taxi to the port (about $25) and were through security and into the VIP lounge in mere minutes. After about a 5 minute wait our photos were taken, credit info exchanged and our key cards received.
The Blue Diamond Suite is sweet! It's great having the side deck to use when the front deck is not available (when at sea). Plenty of closet space for a 7 day sail, but lacking in hanging space for anything longer. However, what lacks in hanging space is made up for in cupboard and shelf storage. The powder room is great for guests, the bed is so comfy (just like home), and the Bose surround sound system is fabulous. The views from every angel are spectacular.
This is a beautiful suite and well worth it especially when you are in the Caribbean (or anywhere it is warm). For 'aft' cruisers, we were pleasantly surprised by our enjoyment of it. And there is seldom any noise from outside or from the bridge above you. Do be prepared on tendering days for the noise of the anchors being dropped; that can come early in the morning.
