  3. Carnival Ecstasy
I couldn't believe it could be this bad. Friends had told me about the Carnival Ecstasy but after reading the reviews after it was refurbished in September I thought it may be alright. If your idea of a good time is being drunk, loud and stupid for four days straight then you may like this cruise. Let's start at the beginning. Embarkation, they had about 40 lanes for check in, well 12:00 comes around and we send all but three to lunch. They're about 300 people in line to check in. Get on the ship and enter the "Grand Atrium" it goes from deck 7 to over deck 11. Area wise it's not grand, so let's put a bar in the middle of it to take up more space. We find the forward elevators and take them to the lido deck to get lunch. Figured we'd do the grill for something easy. If you want a burger they'll give you fries. Don't hold your breath for the guy to give you fries so you can self serve a hot dog, he'll never understand. We grab a silverware roll and a drink and find a seat. The cloth napkins were so old the fuzz was falling off. Finish lunch and go off to explore the ship. I'll get more into the average person on this cruise but this is just a taste. Go up on the sun deck, one up from the lido. There are signs everywhere that say no smoking. They're two 48' tank trucks on the dock fueling the ship. The entire ship smells of diesel. So what does bubba do? Walks 10' past the no smoking sign, looks over the edge at the trucks and lights up. Safety briefing was suppose to start at 3:30. They didn't start making announcements until almost 4:00. You know the part about don't bring food or drink into the muster station? That doesn't apply because we're from Texas. The briefing is just starting at 4:30, Mario the captain says the heck with it. Doesn't care we haven't completed muster drill yet it's time to go, so he pulls out, people still in the show lounges dining room and other muster stations. The only ones that got to see the boat leave we the lucky ones who's muster station out on the top deck. To say this boat was overcrowded is an understatement. The last time I sailed was on a ship over 100' longer and with 500 fewer passengers. You could not find a quiet place. Let's go down the promenade. First there's the casino, then an open air bar. Next you have China Town an enclosed bar with live music, Starbucks and Stripes Disco (not open yet) a few shops then the Starlight Lounge. We have a trivia pursuit contest going on, music out of the PA system, a band in China Town and a bunch of TV's on with the volume up and of course most have been drinking since noon so every time we speak it has to be LOUDLY. Whoever designed this boat really had his head shoved somewhere. To get to the aft dining room you could only get to it by stairs or elevator. The stairs directly above the entrance was one of the many smoking areas. So as you're standing there waiting for the dining room to open you've got to stand in a butt can. Another authorized smoking area was on the lido deck by the pool, just as you came out the door from the atrium. This cruise the corporate low budget let's take our employees on an outing cruise. We get to our table. Just the wife and I, wanted a quiet cruise for our anniversary, we get a table between three 8 tops and a long row of tables with about 30 people from the same group, who again have been drinking all day. We sit down at the table and the table cloth is filthy. Luckily they moved us to the other dining room with the same seating time. Room, ok size, the shower was bigger than I've had on some other cruises so that was nice. Had one outlet in the room and one in the bathroom, the one in the bathroom didn't work. The bed left a lot to be desired. The only part that was firm was the ring around the edge of the bed. This was the two twins pulled together, so you were either on the hard edge of two beds in the middle or were sagging on each half. We walked down the hall toward the back. As we moved further and further along this roar kept getting louder and louder, it was noise coming off the engine room. I heard people comment about how hard it was to sleep with the noise, glad I was toward the front. Room steward was good and took care of us well as did our waiters in the dining room. But as I walked the ship it seemed that most people just were going through the motions. Formal night was wear your best wind suit or come as your favorite ranch hand. If your wanting a drink before the captians introductions you better line up at a bar because there is no staff to get a drink for you. Don't plan on using the library, it's only open a hour a day and the rest of the time is closed for private functions. There were a lot of public areas that were closed a lot for private functions. If you just want to get drunk and loud then this cruise is for you, if you're looking for something more than keep looking.
