We chose the 10/30/18 sailing of the Sun for the ports and were not disappointed except for the fact that NCL cancelled the Hemingway tour in Havana. What? Who goes to Havana without seeing the Hemingway home and hangouts? A cruising veteran, I found the ship, amenities, entertainment and the FOOD mediocre at best. The ship is tired and showing its age even though it was recently refurbished. The floor in the bathroom sagged under pressure and the cabin was unexcusably small even by today's ship standards. Two people could barely walk without one darting in the bathroom. Our cabin steward and his service was great. The entertainment was poor. Except for a fabulous female singer and the onboard singers/dancers. The rest was boring. especially the juggler and the hypnotist. The cruise director's staff was overwhelmingly Hispanic and spoke with such a heavy accent, we were not able to understand much of what was being said. For the most part, they spoke so fast that it was impossible to follow. NCl allows smoking in the casino which eliminated those of us who are allergic from trying our luck. The smoke from the casino permeated the public area on deck 5 and 6 and made visits to those areas short lived and noxious. There is no smoking on the balcony which is of course outside but you can puff away inside the casino and even some were smoking in the lounges and bars. Go figure. The toilet tissue and facial tissue were made from recycled paper and were not comfortable to say the least. The food, except for the specialty restaurants, was bland and the "Complimentary" evening restaurant entrees tasted like frozen and re-heated fare. The exception was the desserts. They were very good and professionally presented. The wait staff worked very hard to give us a pleasant dining experience but the quality of the food negated their efforts. We waited for the prime rib and lobster to appear on the menu but they never did. Something resembling sliced roast beef was served as prime rib but it failed miserably in comparison. As part of our booking we were given "free perks" of free internet minutes and long distance calliing from our cabin. The internet connection was so very slow that you spent most of your minutes waiting to load your email and other sites. The long distance service was billed to our stateroom at $24.95 per call, even though it was a "free perk". An unnecessary visit to the "Guest Relations" resolved the issues. The Panama Canal experience was marred by a lack of observation locations near the front. Most people wanted to see the approach to the locks but were unable to get a good view because of crowding and the wrap around windows were so very dirty you could barely see through them. You'd think that NCL would like for their passengers to enjoy the approach to the locks since, for most, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This was my second cruise on Norwegian and likely will be my last.

Not worth the fare
