We booked this cruise specifically for the itinerary, which included Malta, Sicily, Rhodes, and Crete. While we had a number of issues on board, there were a few outstanding crew members who helped redeem the experience. The food was pretty good in all venues. The boat is fairly old (20+ years) and shows its age. Overall, we would give it a 2.5/5 based on the following:
1. We lost count of the number of cruise staff who told us how many months they had left in their contracts. It made us feel like they couldn't wait to be off the boat, which then made us feel like perhaps we should be eager to get off the boat, too.
2. We were happy to keep our hands washed and use hand sanitizer, but if one more person chirped, "Washy washy!" at us, we might have jumped overboard.
There's a bus station to the cruise terminal for two Euros per person. When you arrive at the terminal, the shuttles to each ship are clearly marked and easy to navigate.
We looked everywhere on the NCL website and in our booking emails for this information and couldn't find it ahead of time.
You can see lots of interesting sites walking around the harbor. No real need to book an excursion here.
It's easy to grab a taxi via Uber and get to the center of the city. From there, you can walk or take the metro to anything you might want to see in the few hours you have. The Acropolis Museum is worth seeing.
There are so many interesting things to see and do within walking distance of the harbor! It's also worth visiting nearby Lindos.
The further you head away from the harbor, the better the prices and service get. While you can walk down the donkey path from the top of the island, it isn't a pleasant experience. It's worth it to pay for a return trip down on the chair lift.
Valletta is a very charming city. There are good views from higher elevations and lots of charming little shops and cafes nearby. If you're a beer lover, visit The Beer Cave for more than 100 different brews from around the world that you can enjoy inside a 450-year-old dungeon-like space. Very cool.
There's some amazing street food in Messina! We particularly enjoyed La Tasteria Gourmet.
