Viking Kara Cruise Review by ejdares
- Sail Date: September 2018
- Destination: Europe River
- Cabin Type: French Balcony
The boat was lovely and just spacious enough. We have a French Balcony room and were very happy with our accommodations. The bed was very comfortable, and we were able to look our the balcony door. Most of our sailing time was at night, and we were out on excursions and touring during the day. One unexpected issue, was that the boats often dock & tie off to another boat. So when you woke up in the morning, you weren't looking at the river, but another boat - six feet away. Glad we didn't upgrade to a balcony suite, don't expect we would have had much time to use it.
There was more than adequate clothing storage. The shower and bathroom were small, but had space for the necessary bathroom items. Our room attendant was amazing, things were always fresh and cleaned.
The common areas were bright, with large floor to ceiling windows. The dining room was comfortable and the meals all very good. There were a few standard items on the menu and then a daily menu. Lots of offerings at both lunch and dinner. Breakfast options din't really change much. The omelet station was good, but would have been nice had they changed some of the ingredients during the trip. There was also a buffet offering on the Aquavit for breakfast and lunch - not sure about dinner.
The crew was amazing - the front desk, dining staff, and especially the lounge staff. All were friendly and very accommodating. Our cruise director, Candy was amazing, making sure our excursions and time on the trip was enjoyable. My only issue was the regular lounge entertainment was lacking. We did have a couple of special guest come in and they were great.
The ports and excursions were very good. Most of the excursions brought you in to the old town area of the ports and provided an overview (about 2 - 3 hours). As we are accustomed to independent travel, we liked this format. We usually had several more hours in each city to explore at our leisure.
Our favorite stop were the windmills in Kinderdijk. This was an rare opportunity to see 18 functioning windmills and to see how the Dutch used the windmills to drain their land.
We had a wonderful time, met some wonderful people and am looking forward to our next Viking cruise.

One issue, bed only had a duvet cover, which was too hot and heavy. Cabin steward realized the issue and remade our bed with an additional top sheet.
Room was always cleaned and freshened when returned from excursions and dinner.
