We were celebrating our wedding anniversary, originally we wanted to sail on Queen Elizabeth to Venice, but that was full !
The only alternative on our dates was the Oceana, a ship we have never sailed in before, to say we were 'disappointed' with this 20 year old ship (previously owned by Princess cruises) would be a gross over statement.
If you like paying over £5 grand for a broom cupboard for two weeks, then, the Oceana should be YOUR first choice!!!.
As per my general comments above.
used local buses (that were FREE to use)
Been here 3 times before, so knew the sights.
Inside the port we found group of 6 other travellers negotiating with local taxi drivers for a visit to this attraction which is 30 miles from Messina but well worth a visit. For 8 of us I got the price down to 25 euros each. The cost of the ships excursion via coach to this same place was 57 euros each!!!! They got 45 minutes visiting, we had over two hours. Who are the mugs here!!!!!!
Be very careful when buying a drink or eats at any of the cafes there, they WILL charge you a 'placement fee' on top of your order ie a beer etc, this 'placement fee' is just for sitting on a chair at one of their tables
Red top bus again much cheaper than ships excursions, & they visit the same places.
