The Norewegian Epic was recommended by a travel agent. We flew to Barcelona, Spain a couple of days earlier to tour and explore the city on our own. Boarding and disembarkation went very smoothly, the highlight of our Epic experience. We were not wowed by the overall dining experience. I have had better food and service on other cruise lines. Only one time a party of four went to The Taste for lunch. Our waiter was horrible. Others that came after us got service and we had to continue making requests for our beverages and appetizers. The waiter disappeared for long periods of time and the next table over also complained. When some, not all, of our appetizers arrived, they were not good. My wife ordered nachos. The chips had gone limp and soggy and the food toppings were lukewarm at best. We got up to leave and told the restaurant manager (?) why. Our room steward, on a few occasions, only left us one coffee cup. Once, he did not leave coffee pack replacements. One day we left at 7:30 AM for an excursion and I turned the hallway dial to “Make Up Room.” We returned at 2:30 PM and the room had not been touched. We had no unused towels, an unmade bed, and the room service tray was still in the room. I complained to cruise services and was told he had until 3:00 PM and that he had 15-16 rooms to service. If true, it appears there have been cost cutting cutbacks in stewards and the demands on them are too high. Anyway, it was unacceptable that our room was not made up that late in the day. The Spa provided my wife and me with massages. That was fine, but there is too much up selling of products. I realize they are profit centers, but it's over the top. We came for rest and relaxation, not to be urged to spend more money. I believe the internet package cost is too high. The internet speed is OK, but not great; certainly not for the price charged. The room size is absurdly small. We liked the separate toilet, shower, and sink allowing for us to get cleaned up without having to wait for the other to clear the bathroom. But the rest of the room is inadequate. When my wife was sitting on the chair doing her makeup, I had to roll across the bed to get past her. There is no coffee table in front of the sofa/loveseat as other cruise ships offer. There is no place to put the room service tray as in the past. Four couples came together for this cruise. We got adjacent rooms with the intention of having the balcony partitions opened so we could enjoy morning coffee or evening wine together. We were very disappointed to be told NCL does not open the partitions unless a minor child is next door. Other cruise lines always open the partitions. The entertainment is fair, but not great. We believe many shows such as the shipboard singers/dancers and comedian were very short. We are used to nightly shows of mixed variety in the ship's theater, often with some guest celebrities. It was not the case on the Epic. The Howl at the Moon dueling piano singers were entertaining. One singer, Isabel Commandeur, was outstanding. She needs to be in a larger venue. Overall, the group of eight that traveled were disappointed with NCL and none of us will be traveling again with the cruise line.
