Sail Date: Sep 2018

We are an early 50's couple and have been on 14 cruises on various lines - Norwegian, Carnival, Celebrity and Princess. We chose this as we hadn't been on Royal in about 15 years and wanted to try it without spending too much or going too far. We live less than an hour from Tampa so we chose this cruise. Embarkation took about 10 minutes ! We had enjoyed a drink and lunch at the buffet within 30 minutes and the rooms were ready by 1 p.m. The muster drill was also quick and efficient - one of the best we've been to. Our room attendant didn't leave any menus for us to order continental breakfast in the room so the first day we didn't get any coffee or anything. We thought it just wasn't available on Royal. I called her but no answer. I reached guest services the next day and they brought one menu to us. She still didn't leave any for us to use the rest of the cruise - I had to write her a note. She didn't learn our names like most stewards do. She did keep the room clean. The bed was a bit hard and the mattress cover kept coming off every night. Yes the rooms are small but not uncommon for that category. It had plenty of storage space (Oceanview Deck 3). Daytime poolside entertainment was awful. The band played Raggae versions of Kenny Rogers, John Denver and Paul Simon - apparently this is their idea of "Island Music. Have you heard of Jimmy Buffett? Kenny Chesney? There was just no upbeat or fun vibe and nothing one could dance to. We don't need a wild party, but geez I don't want nap time either. There was maybe 20 minutes of dancing at the sail away party and some good music during the belly flop contest on the last day. The DJ was great but got a very short time to play and then it was the bad band, or hours there would be no music at all. The big movie screen ran the same loop of blooper videos literally for five days straight … all day. There were movies at night but all day every day … the dreaded loop. As for evening shows, the marriage show was entertaining and the comedian was good too. We walked through the casino and it was really smoky.-the standard for most cruise casinos. One side of the pool deck is also designated for smoking too. The service in the buffet, the pool, and the Schooner bar were all great. We never waited for anything. Tables were cleaned and bussed quickly and the minute you sat down someone wanted to get us juice, coffee or a drink. The food in the buffet was average and there was a good salad bar. No freshly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. They were pre-made and sitting in a tray. Most cruises have a poolside grill for burgers at least. There just wasn't much food much variety and no specialty restaurants on this one except Johnny Rockets. The pizza was good and fresh. We ate in the dining room once. Again, the service was great but the prime rib just Ok. The service was really the highlight of this cruise. We stayed on the ship at Costa Maya and had a wonderful day by the pool (memorizing the loop video LOL). Though I thought the pool entertainment was lacking, the cruise director, Patricio was very engaging and did a good job interacting. He was always around and upbeat and didn't constantly try to sell you things! This cruise was a relaxing getaway and I would cruise again on Royal just not on Majesty again because the offerings are limited for my liking. However I would still say it's great for a first time cruiser to see if you like cruising. You won't be overwhelmed. It is easy to get around on this ship and the crew is amazing.
