Having cruised on more than 12 cruises with Princess, we wanted to try something different and chose Cunard. This was a great experience overall. We found the ship roomier than our Princess experiences, the food in the Britannia Restaurant was good, the lectures were superior, and the entertainment was excellent.
Overall, we liked the ship and appreciated its decor. After the first two nights, we had a new Captain (female). She provided a great midday review and participated in a one-on-one interview in the theatre. Her responses were informative and pleasant- giving confidence in her as a Captain.
See comments below re cabin.
We found the service to be good, although not as chatty and pleasant as we have found on our other cruises.
Unfortunately, we had to miss one port and re-arrange another due to technical difficulties - the Captain explained this thoroughly each time. (I do notice, though, from other reviews, that these problems have been around for a while.)
I had been apprehensive about any class-distinction on Cunard and was pleasantly surprised that this was not in evidence (except that we could not get out of the lift on Deck 11 - where all the 'Grills' restaurants were). We did, though, appreciate the higher standard of dress in the evening than we have found previously.
So, yes, we will cruise Cunard again.
Now for my one real complaint. On Princess cruises we had been asked to nominate our preferred time for disembarkation. On QE2 we received a note the night before disembarkation, TELLING us of our allocated disembarkation time! On speaking to the purser's desk we were told that this is Cunard policy and our only option was to self-disembark at 7.10 am (Ridiculous suggestion when dealing with septuagenarians!!)
Finally, we were told that we could move our disembarkation time to 9am (instead of 9.45). OK, so into the theatre we went ready for 9am and were shocked to find no staff in attendance (again, comparing with Princess, we expected to find many staff in position to assist/advise passengers). 9am came and went - the lady in front of me said "What now? Do we disembark ourselves??" Finally at 9.15 a staff member arrived and allowed us to go. Unfortunately this was a bad experience to finish off what had been a good cruise.
Still, on balance, we thought the whole experience was superior and are happy to cruise Cunard again.
Our cabin on was kept spotlessly clean by our steward. We appreciated the 2-seater settee, although it was somewhat old and needs replacing. The only other aspect of the cabin that we did not like was the wardrobe arrangement. Princess ships have an open wardrobe that provides great access to clothes. The one on Cunard was a standard wardrobe next to the bathroom - resulting in much congestion at shower/dressing time.
