Our second cruise on this lovely ship, a vessel that’s low on bling and high on understated style.
Balcony room E322, serviced impeccably by steward Valens, was clean and in very good condition. Love having a proper-sized shower with glass door instead of a curtain. Big TV with tremendous movie selection, plenty of tea & coffee, fridge if you need it. Superbly comfortable bed. Balcony a little on the small side but fine for 2.
All public areas on the ship are spotless and very tastefully decorated - if you want glass lifts and chrome fittings this is not the ship for you.
Dinner in the main restaurant (freedom dining) was consistently excellent, other eating experiences as follows:
Horizon Buffet: a serious bun fight at times (some punters went at it like they’d never seen food before) but quality good and always plentiful.
Poolside: lovely cheeseburger and fries.
Sindhu: the star of the ship in my opinion, incredible quality and taste, an absolute bargain at £20 per head.
Glass House: great for lunch, the small plates are imaginative, well-cooked and great value at £6.95 for 3.
Limelight Club: another lovely meal, entertainment by Claire Sweeney was good fun. Well worth 25 quid for something different.
Drinks on P&O are very reasonably priced and all the wines we tried were decent - you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a good bottle.
We found the service in all areas, at all times, to be very friendly and efficient. The staff work tirelessly and show great patience when occasionally faced with a minority of passengers who appear to have been born without manners.
Didn’t get too involved in the entertainment, but J’Adele was fantastic - almost a carbon copy.
Ports of call
Stavanger: lovely town, good for a wander with lots to see.
Flam: Small, but a beautiful location.
Olden: a bit bigger, with a nice little church, but not much else.
Bergen: great for a wander again, picturesque harbour.
Overall I would urge anyone to give Britannia a try, she’s a great ship and a wonderful all-round experience. There are negative reviews out there, but some people are just impossible to please and would whinge if you offered them £10 notes for a fiver. Go with a relaxed attitude and an open mind and I reckon you’ll love it.
