Avoid at all costs. This was my 15th cruise, and my first - and last - with CMV. We chose it because it departed from Dublin. This was, in hindsight, the only real thing to recommend it. In short: terrible customer service; no interest in resolving issues (including disabled passengers not being accommodated with shuttle buses - one woman with arthritis of the spine was made to wait for an hour and a half to get back to the ship); watered-down drinks; bistro woeful (restaurant very good); flooded bathroom and scalding/freezing shower (complained FOUR times, never fixed); a steward who - on the day of disembarkation was already making up our room for the next guests before check-out time; dreadful entertainment; ports that were cheap to dock in, but miles away from anything of interest; overpriced and misrepresented tours. I could go on, but I won't. Instead, I wrote a three page letter to Cruise & Maritime giving them a right of reply. The reply was, effectively: we are sorry you almost got burned / hypothermia from your shower and that your bathroom kept flooding (with sewerage from someone else's room) but this can happen on a cruise ship and it's part and parcel of cruising. Add to that: we gave you a 20% discount on the tour that was supposed to be "Leisurely" but which even Usain Bolt would have struggled to keep up with. Their reply finished by saying that they hoped my experiences wouldn't stop me from travelling with them again. Yes, they wrote that without irony. Avoid like the plague.

Avoid if you want an enjoyable holiday - overpriced, underwhelming and dangerous

Cabin Review

Cabin
A nice enough cabin if it hadn't been for the ridiculously large bunk bed fastened to the wall and the pornographic artwork (once seen, never unseeable). The fact that our cabin flooded more than once (when our bathroom wasn't even in use - yuk) and the shower ranged from scalding to freezing without touching the temperature dial (so many plumbers came to our room and did nothing that I called it Not-So-Super Marioworld) was inexcusable.

  • Akureyri
'Leisurely' implies at a relaxed pace. Instead, half an hour at Godfoss Waterfall (15 minutes to walk up, 15 minutes to walk back, zero time to enjoy) and half an hour at the Botanical Gardens (15 minutes to walk in, 15 minutes to walk out, zero time to get a cup of coffee or even run to the bathroom). Guide did not accompany us anywhere, but proved a great gift for insomniacs - his information about Akureyri was duller than dishwater. Tour terrible, guide terrible and overpriced too. Complained to the ship who said the tour had 'run as advertised' (it hadn't) and was given a 20% discount. I don't mind paying as long as I get what is advertised. This was a complete RIP-OFF.

Great shopping, lovely people and a chance to spend some money, because you won't be spending any in Iceland!

We should have seen it coming. We'd been so excited about going to the Blue Lagoon. Our guide, however, was not. On arrival, we were handed a towel that wouldn't cover anyone's modesty, a blue wristband to open lockers and to pay for drinks etc. in the lagoon and ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER. Lockers didn't work, no concessions to the elderly or disabled. Our guide failed to tell us what time to be back at the bus until I reminded her to do so. Gift Shop is a rip-off. Products are made in France and Denmark, NOT ICELAND and, even better, the Blue Lagoon is man-made and is actually the water from a geothermic power-plant which you can see right next door. Woeful.

We didn't actually dock in the proper marina. CMV prefers to dock miles out because it's cheaper. Shuttle buses were supposed to arrive every half hour. We waited an hour and a half for one (FYI, the other, non-CMV cruise ships had shuttle buses every 20 minutes). No representation from CMV on the buses. Passengers pushed and shoved out the way when bus finally did arrive. One woman with arthritis of the spine knocked over. Complained onboard and was told that the shuttles are nothing to do with the ship. Received a voucher for the Indian Restaurant onboard as an apology. Told them I didn't want it, instead I wanted to see the issue rectified so it wouldn't happen again. It will.
