We have just completed a 7 day west Mediterranean cruise [August 2018] on board the MSC Fantasia departing from Barcelona. Our party of six passengers included four adults and two kids aged 4 and 11. We had two three birth aft cabins. We booked the AUREA experience and had two deck 12 aft S3 category suites. The cruise itinerary included stops at Ajaccio, France; Civitavecchia, Italy; La Spezia, Italy; Genoa, Italy; Cannes, France and Palma de Mallorca, Spain before returning to Barcelona Spain. MSC does offer a cruise of similar duration on the MSC Seaview but the itinerary is not nearly as attractive in my opinion. I summarize the highlights and lowlights of the cruise below.
Negatives
While the embarkation process in Barcelona was seamless despite the roughly 1000 passengers that embarked at this port once onboard instructions were not as vivid as I’d like. We were first time cruisers so the separate registration for children (safety bracelets, kids clubs registration etc.) was all new to us, ditto confirming meal times, linking credit card to MSC ship card, enabling Wi-Fi, early booking of spa treatments and locating our cabin. Once on-board it took me two hours to sort all this including two trips to customer services were long queues existed with passengers essentially seeking help with the same questions.
Both of our cabins 12204 and 12206 were spacious and kept spotlessly clean by our cabin attendant. The cabin was about the size of small hotel room measuring around 27sqM and in this regard was significantly bigger than standard balcony cabins. The extra space allowed for a walk in wardrobe and a bathroom with a full size bathtub – both welcome features for travelers with children. The sofa converts to a very comfortable large single bed. The outside deck at 4.5m in length was generous and having two cabins side by side meant we were able to open an outside divider increasing outside deck length to 9m. Although labeled as a “suite” it isn’t a suite in the traditional due to the open plan design.
We arranged our own tour(s) of Barcelona - a truly beautiful city. If you get the opportunity do also travel a short distance outside of Barcelona to Montserrat. The Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey anchored in the multi-peaked mountain range near Barcelona is breathtaking.
We decide to walk the streets of Civitavecchia, the sea port on the Tyrrhenian Sea which is located about 60 kilometres west-north-west of center of Rome. We viewed the massive Forte Michelangelo which was first commissioned from Donato Bramante by Pope Julius II, to defend the port of Rome and the Church of Immacolata. A pleasant, low cost free and easy day.
We took MSC Excursion SPE05 to visit the leaning tower of Pisa. While the tower known worldwide for its unintended tilt is interesting for about 30 seconds, the nearby Pisa Cathedral really is impressive in architecture and scale and worth the 1 hour bus ride to see.
