We chose the Cruise as it was departing locally (Dundee), visiting Iceland, Orkney and Shetland which were places we wanted to visit and at a time we could go. Cruise benefit is you unpack once rather than re-packing every day for next location. Overall we were very impressed.
Ship was great - lovely teak decks and in good repair.
Embarkation - a small queue but much shorter than expected, and the suitcases were arriving at our cabin by the time we were shown to it which was a pleasant surprise.
Dining - Waldorf second sitting for Dinner. Five course meals on a nightly basis - amazing variety of meals (I don't think any main courses were served twice over the 12 days), excellent quality of food, and outstanding service from the waiters. Nothing was too much trouble - dishes were altered if requested with no hassle, no dishes ever unobtainable, and all speedily served. Also went to the Breakfast Buffet here as well as lunch buffet as calmer and more easy to access than the Bistro. Again food excellent and great variety. Afternoon Tea was in the Bistro.
Wide variety of on-board activities - the series of talks by the Music and Vikings experts were excellent (Viking LongShips, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Elgar, Gulf Stream) and learning to do Ballroom dancing was great, as well as Line Dancing and Aerobics whilst we were at sea.
Evening entertainment was good - outstanding violinist, and pianists (including in Sinatra's Bar), plus guitarist/DJ. Some good evening shows too.
Ports were good although for a couple were some way outside town centre e.g. Reykjavik and Newcastle. We mostly used the CMV excursions in order to see as much as possible and these were very good. In Reykjavik the tours we wanted were full so booked externally which worked well.
Overall it was an excellent experience and we are aiming to go back to the Magellan next year.
The cabin was spacious, plenty of hanging space, good sized shower, and good overall floor space. Good facilities and comfortable. Kept clean by twice daily visits from staff. Booking a CMV package got us a free upgrade to Superior Plus Twin.
Took a lot of time to get into Newcastle via the Metro system which we were bussed to.
