We've been on two other Alaska cruises, both on the Celebrity Infinity, so we decided to try Star Princess primarily due to the itinerary. This was a one-way southbound cruise from when Anchorage (Whittier) to Vancouver where before we had done 7-day roundtrips from Seattle and Vancouver. This cruise included Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay National Park (further north than we had been before) and were definitely the highlights of the cruise. The weather was incredible each and every day with temps in the 70's and not a drop of rain the entire week. That part was almost unbelievable. However, we have to place the actual cruise ship experience as average when comparing it to our cruises on Celebrity, Royal and NCL. We've also been on two Crystal Cruises but it wouldn't be fair the Star Princess to the Crystal Serenity (5 stars in my opinion but the cost is exorbitant). We found the food in the buffet to be just fine given our expectations. However, we felt the dinners in the MDR were below par. We had four breakfasts also in the MDR and two were great and two were not good at all. Consistency is an issue. Entertainment was average for this type of ship. Our cabin (D733) was mostly enjoyable (especially the huge balcony) but we heard rattles and banging noises on a few of the nights which made it very difficult to sleep. The ship is showing its age and I think is starting to creak and moan.
This cabin was originally supposed to be a disabled room however was never put to that use. We loved the "walk in" shower however the bathroom smelled musty most of the time. The balcony is wonderful! Our cabin steward was adequate and kept the cabin in good shape. The mini suite was supposed to have two TV's and ours only had one. Also, we were never offered our complimentary champagne which is part of the mini suite offering. These were no big deals, however a somewhat "big deal" is that you can hear loud rattles and banging noises in this ecabin on certain nights, I guess when the ship is going at a certain speed. It was really bad and caused us a couple nights of poor sleep.
We had a beautiful sunny day to view the glacier. it was wonderful and saw a lot of calving.
We walked around town a bit. Not much to see.
