Seeing the midnight sun from the North Cape, endless fjord vistas as the ship cruised the inland waterways, visiting the Orkney Islands and Edinburgh, and sailing up the Thames to Greenwich at dusk were all very special.
The Sea is a beautiful ship with impeccable, clean Scandanavian interior design and finishes. The cabin was excellent in its arrangement and furnishings and very comfortable. The bathroom (with heated tile floors!) was the best we've encountered in over 40 ocean and river cruises.
On board, we especially liked the frequent solo piano and small-group classical music events scheduled in different venues at convenient times. And the cultural lecturers were outstanding, covering Viking history, Norwegian geography and archeology, and the birds and animals of the north.
The food was excellent in the main restaurant, very good in the buffet, and outstanding at the Chef's Table (Manfredi's is OK. but not memorable). Service was excellent and friendly everywhere. The bartenders were also attentive and friendly, especially in the Explorer Lounge with its expansive front-of-the-ship view of the passing surroundings. We recommend buying the drink's package, which is reasonably priced and allows for nearly unlimited choices of wines and spirits at any time.
For the most part, we found the included excursions to be interesting, with fair to good coverage of the local areas, comfortable transportation, and good guides. We did not do any of the additional-cost excursions.
We recommend starting on Oslo as we did; it's a beautiful, very interesting city. Buy the Oslo pass, which provides free entry to virtually all cultural venues in the city, and covers all bus, tram, and harbor cruise transportation. Spend three or four days there, then take the train over the mountains to Bergen, and spend perhaps two more days before sailing, exploring the old harbor (Breggen) area, in particular.
All together a perfect way to spend a holiday.
Excellent cabin decor and arrangement. Bathrooms are the best at sea. Both our room attendants were outstanding.
