NCL Spirit-a busy itinerary

  • Destination: the Eastern Mediterranean
  • Cabin Type: Balcony

We choose cruises based on destination and pricing. We should have paid more attention to NCL Spirit's Greek Isles itinerary; it was busy; only one sea day at the beginning of the cruise. Most shore excursions began around 9 a.m., so there wasn't much leisure time onboard. Our cabin was comfortable, roomy enough. In the bathroom, the shower was actually "spacious", if you can say that about a cruise ship's shower! Entertainment aboard ship was outstanding! Specialty dining restaurants overall were great, maybe with the exception of Cagney's Steakhouse which we found disappointing. Le Bistro however, was outstanding. The Blue Lagoon cafe was quite nice. We used it several times. We would have preferred a few more trivia events. The theme, or motif on the Spirit is curious: Chinese! An interesting story about why it's that motif. We're not loyal to any particular cruise line, used 4 others on occasion.

Overall, we'd give this NCL ship, and the cruise itself, a "3 star" rating.

Cabin Review

Balcony
Cabin BD 9672

This was the best cabin on Deck 9! Just around the corner from elevators; a deck above several lounges/bars, two decks above dining rooms and specialty restaurants, one deck above entertainment venues. Perfect

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

After a 1-1/2 hr coach tour, we had 4 hrs on our own, and used that time to view the once-weekly (only on Sundays) changing of the guards, and a visit to the Museum, having lunch there with a full view of the Acropolis.

Sadly I can only give this tour a "3" in five-stars because of the frightful descent from Santorini on the foot trail. The lines for cable cars were too long, and the heat was exhausting. Even though the operator couldn't take the blame for that. The winery visit was nice, though. And our guide was very good.

This tour begain 30 minutes late, while the guides waited for no-shows! There should be a shorter wait time for late comers! Then, there were 2 guides, and the tour began as bilingual, although the tour description didn't mention that! There were 17 people in the tour, and only 2 had Italian as their native language; yet the guides translated EVERYTHING into Italian. Our guide had a high-pitched female voice, a thick Italian accent, so it was difficult to understand her. She had little guiding experience with large groups, and spoke directly to just the 3 or 4 people who were closest to her. She made no attempt to wait for all participants to get closer to her. Not a good experience at all.

We didn't find Malta appealing at all. The drive through the countryside to villages was boring.

This 2-hour tour was very good. The guide followed the published itinerary exactly, and we stopped at each site for an overview. Highly recommended.

The pace and timing (3 hrs) of this tour were very good.

Mykonos

We toured Mykonos on our own, but should have selected an organized tour.

Sistine Chapel

Too many visitors. Not an enjoyable visit. Not worth the cost of this excursion.

St. Peter's Square

Skipped the line, but once inside, there were hordes of visitors, so unable to spend quality time there. Not a good value for the cost of this excursion.

Vatican Museums

This was absolutely horrible. Yes, we "skipped the lines" to enter the Museum, but once inside, there were hordes of visitors. Not a rewarding experience at all. Not a good investment of our travel dollars.

Villa Borghese

This was enjoyable. There was a 2-hour window, and it was adequate. There were not hordes of visitors, and we could spend quality time at each icon.
