First Viking Ocean Cruise

Viking Star Cruise Review by Happy Hot Dog

Trip Details

  • Destination: the Mediterranean

It won't be our last, in fact we booked another Viking Ocean cruise while on board (Viking Homelands). We had sailed the Rhine with Viking, but had never been on an ocean cruise with any cruise company. I wasn't too sure about being on the open ocean for any length of time. One of the reasons we chose Empires of the Mediterranean was there were no open ocean cruising days, we were in a port every day. We chose our excursions before embarkation, something I would recommend for all travelers. We were amazed at the variety of experiences available. From mountain biking and off-roading to 'old town' walking tours and cheese farm tours. We tried most dining experiences. We found the service less attentive in The Restaurant during breakfast so we chose the buffet after that. Dinner service was consistently good in The Restaurant. Manfredi's menu was vast and very different from anything else offered on the ship. We were lucky enough to have 2 reservations there so we could try many things, but the menu is the same daily. Our cabin was on level 5. I'm not sure how different it would be on a higher or lower level, but I would never want to be without a balcony. We sat out there every day, we especially liked watching the port arrivals and departures.

Cabin Review

Cabin Penthouse Veranda 5098

The higher level cabin entitled us to choose our excursions and specialty restaurant dinner reservations earlier than some other cabins. I would recommend our cabin choice for that reason. Also, at that level the mini bar was restocked daily for no additional charge. A nice extra but we didn't really use the mini bar. We did purchase a beverage package for the cruise. I would recommend that as well.

Acropolis

I was awestruck by the site, it's historical significance and the beauty

City Tour

This was a pleasant mix of a town tour and free time. Beautiful day, beautiful buildings.

Katakolon (Olympia)

This was a scheduled stop that cancelled due to weather. there were high winds on that side of the island. The Captain came over the announcement system and explained that we were going to the other side where there were less winds. I was amazed at the ability of the Viking staff to have a replacement tour 'at the ready' on the other side of the island. We visited Sparta, the Olive Museum (Great!) and a winery.

Fira Walking Tour

The walking turned out to be difficult for some so may not have been represented properly

Prehistoric Museum

The archeological dig visit was great. Could have been a very dry and interest- specific subject but again the passion of the guide brought the site to life.

We were docked right in town and walked to a boat for a cruise of the bay. Our Lady of the Rocks, the story, the artifacts - amazing!

Cable Car

We were brought to the top of the mountain in a van. The ride up to the cable car may have been the most interesting terrain I have ever seen. The view from the top was unbelievable. Unfortunately, the winds were too strong for the cable car to operate that day so we rode back down in the van. Not what we expected, but because of the beauty, not a disappointment.

St. Mary's Church

The cloistered nuns in Pag town bake a biscuit-like bread. Our guide went into a small entrance and asked for a sample for all of us on the tour. We toured the church on our own.

Amazing! The bus ride there showcased the island of Pag. The Bura winds have shaped the island on one side, looks like a lunar landscape. The other side is where the cheese farm is, the vegetation still affected by the bura and the amount of salt carried by the wind. The farm tour and tasting was really great, we almost didn't choose it because of the length. Not to be missed.
