Just knowing that someone would be 'holding our hands' throughout the entire trip changed my attitude about traveling in China. After all, there were so many sights - the pandas, the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors - that I have always wanted to see in person, but the thought of traveling in such a large foreign country - different language, food, customs - was daunting. Viking offered an attractive opportunity for my husband and me to realize this dream, so we jumped on it. Because it was such a comprehensive overview of China we really don't feel a need to return. However, it was a marvelous experience and the cruise portion was definitely a highlight. The food was delicious, the stateroom was more than adequate, the cultural talks were excellent, the staff was attentive and delightful, the entertainment was extremely well done -- by the young people in the staff, no less! -- and the excursions were all worthwhile. No complaints! Oh, and the views from the ship - a photographer's delight! We didn't really spend any time lounging on our veranda, but it was a great place to stand to take pictures!
Our cabin steward kept our bed made and room tidy. So pleasant to walk into the cabin after being out an hour or several hours and finding it in perfect shape. One evening we were greeted by a towel that he made into the shape of a dog! It was sitting on our bed. The orchid on the coffee table was a nice touch, too. And a feature that I especially enjoyed was the channel on our tv that showed the view from the bow. I could see what was coming in case I wanted to go out on the veranda and take a picture.
