Grand Princess Cruise Review by cruiser314
- Sail Date: July 2018
- Destination: Alaska
- Cabin Type: Premium Balcony
Furthermore, it included our primary interest which is the Hubbard glacier, over 20 stories high and more than 4 MILES wide. We got to within a half mile, closest in 35 years which was GREAT. The heavy windy drizzle added to the adventure. The Hubbard glacier ranks with the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, the hot springs of Yellowstone, and the slot canyons as natural wonders worth experiencing.
Caveat. If your interest includes a cruise with enrichment programs, Princess cruises are not for you. Too many onboard promotional programs that enrich the vendors; too few enrichment lectures about Alaska, its flora and fauna, the Hubbard glacier itself, or the ports of call.
Forget about seeing whales and other sea life from the ship. No animal life will come close to a 2600 passenger liner plowing through the sea. Forget about excursions to see wildlife in nature with hundreds of tourist swarming and cackling in groups through the forest!
Even the on board promotions of excursions to see original totem poles in the Ketchikan state park with a guided tour by a native ranger turned out to be false. Or the claim that Ketchikan has more rain than the Amazon forest, only not on the day you're there to experience it!
Juneau and Ketchikan are tourist traps, a shopper's paradise for junk tourist souvenirs.
Except for the Hubbard glacier which can only be experienced by boat, Alaska's wonders and beauty cannot be experienced on a 5-6 hour shore excursion. Be forewarned.

Totem Bight State Parkmislead about native ranger guide which it turned out was not available. mislead about the price which included Totem Bight Park, but not the separate admission.View All 105 Totem Bight State Park Reviews
However, the Totem Bight Park was exceptional even without the services of a native guide.
