My wife and I went on a back to back cruise on the Star. This cruise and the following week, June 10. This was only our second cruise, the first being an Alaskan cruise.

We took the People Mover from the Piazzale Roma to the cruise ship terminal. The People Mover costs 1,50 euros per person. If you plan on using the People Mover at the end of the cruise, purchase an extra ticket for everyone. It doesn't have an expiration date and you won't have to wait in line to buy the return ticket at the end of your cruise. We did that and were able to walk by the long line of people buying tickets. When you go through the turnstile at the People Mover, there is a validation machine (like you see at the vaporetto) and also a scanner. Hold your People Mover ticket under the scanner. We saw a lot of confused people trying the validation machine and the turnstile was not opening.

Embarkation was slow and not very well organized we thought. But we got there around 12 noon when it was crowded. By the time we were ready to board, there was not much of a line. So if we cruise again, we are going to arrive mid afternoon.

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin MB

Our mini-suite was great. I spent a lot of time picking our cabin after studying the deck layout for our deck (deck 11) and the deck above (deck 12). On the Star, deck 12 has the pool and the Garden Cafe buffet. I wanted to make sure that our cabin was not below either of these areas. Our cabin is considered a forward cabin rather than mid-ship. I picked a great location. We had cabins above us and a cabin or two across the hall from us. We didn't have any noise issues. The cabin had plenty of room for us and the bathroom was great. It had a full bathtub and shower with a sliding glass door, an okay sink area and a separate toilet area, also with a sliding glass door, to provide an appearance of privacy. The bathtub is a little higher than a normal tub in the U.S. but getting into it was not nearly as bad as getting into the garden tubs common in U.S. homes now. There was also a hand hold in the shower if you needed it. My wife took a bath or two and loved it.

The flat screen TV worked just fine and you could get English speaking movies on it and some news. Since we were going to be on the ship for two weeks I picked this type of room mainly because of the larger bathroom for my wife and me.

There was only 1 U.S. type plug in the room and 1 British type plug and 1 European type plug but there was also two USB plugs for charging cell phones or laptops.

The closet had plenty of hangers. There is a light in the closet. It is in the back and you have to reach in to turn it on. It is hard to see and my wife thought there was no light at first. We were very pleased with our room and our cabin steward, Cesar, was great.

Port Reviews

Dubrovnik

Very picturesque town. We did a Game of Thrones tour with Dubrovnik Day Tours that I arranged on my own. We enjoyed the tour and had time to shop and eat dinner.

Kotor

Very neat walled town. We walked around the town on our own.

Katakolon (Olympia)

I arranged a tour with Olympic Traveller to see the ancient Olympic site, museum and an olive oil tasting.

Athens (Piraeus)

I arranged a tour with PK Tours for a full day tour of Athens. Great tour and we went to the Parthenon first and beat some of the crowds.

Split

We did a walking tour with Split Walking Tours which was good and still left time for us to wander around on our own, shop and get lunch.
