This was our second cruise with Thomson and the appeal was particularly to see St Petersburg . Paid far too much by booking early and in fact, cancelled and rebooked about 12 weeks before departure and saved £500. Booked an executive cabin which was impressive / had a few issues which should have been picked up before we boarded eg: dripping tap, damaged glass on balcony and light not working but these were resolved . Cabin stewards were excellent- special mention of Ferdinand ! Good selection of restaurants though there were only 2 menus in Italian 47 over the 14 days so bit repetitive. Ship was clean and tidy. Entertainment was variable with curious sessions like “ Ask the acupuncturist” and a dreadful live band with a girl who could not sing but there was a talented saxophonist and a good pianist so you can pick and choose what suits you. Evenings spent on the balcony with a drink and incredible sunsets on calm seas takes some beating ! We paid extra for the premium all inclusive but it wasn’t really worth it although was handy to have daily bottled water delivered to the cabin and the coffees in the Coffee Port are lovely and popular. WiFi was really expensive onboard and there was no logic to usage allowances - costs £90 but we were charged £180 for very little access. Worth waiting to get off at a port to download data and access emails etc. Destination staff were friendly but knew little about practical issues in the ports eg: where to get taxis, cost etc. With limited mobility, this was important for us and was a real problem in Tallinn and Copenhagen where there were no taxis or shuttle buses and it was a very very long walk into the main areas. In terms of excursions, we only did a few as we prefer to see places independently but the St Petersburg city tour was good although we missed a couple of key places because of traffic delays . Avoid the ballet excursion - was terrible - in the Aurora theatre which was more like a civic centre under renovation and the St Petersburg ballet was so amateurish. There were 3/4 excellent dancers but the rest were poor and didn’t dance in time - reminded us of dawn french in vicar of dibley - very disappointing. Beware of rip off bicycle rickshaws in Tallinn’s central square. A taxi is supposed to cost 10 euros although there aren’t any - we effectively got mugged by a girl and her accomplice and had to pay 80 Euro’s to get away safely . Favourite ports were St Petersburg , Oslo, Stockholm and Warnemunde- really pretty tourist resort . Overall this was a lovely cruise with friendly staff and a good itinerary. Main advice would be to go for the best cabin you can afford and if possible, a balcony to get great views all the time .
