With ransom paid, Richard the Lionheart left Durnstein. Why? It is a beautiful little town, one of those out of the way places that you hear about but rarely see. Our Danube trip was full of surprises, the Budapest Opera house with an impromptu concert, the library at the monastery at Melk, the concert in Vienna, and a side trip to Belvedere Castle in Vienna for a glimpse of Klimt. I cannot say enough about the accommodations, the hotels were first rate, and the river cruise was leisurely and relaxing. Our cruise director was informative, helpful in side trip selections, and gave just the right amount of humor and seriousness as the sights required. Our day trip guides were outstanding, and walking tours were not overly taxing. We had free time to explore at our own pace, and enjoyed that too!
Our ship, Avalon Expression, though several years old, looked like it had been launched just this year. Cleaned every day, and the crew was friendly and hospitable. Our evening entertainment was a mix of local culture and known musical selections. The food and table service would be rated as superior.
After 3 months, we still talk about what a wonderful trip this was, and how beautiful the landscape and cities are along the Danube. We wholeheartedly endorse this vessel and this cruise line.
Our cabin was more than suffient for our trip. It was well appointed, and very clean.
